Gettysburg Opens Spring with Two Wins in Hilton Head

Bullets improve to 5-0 on the season

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Gettysburg College (5-0) remained unbeaten this season with two more wins as the Bullets took down Drew University 6-3 and Marietta College 9-0 0 to open their spring trip on Sunday.

Match Recap
The Bullets earned a 2-1 edge with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to open play. Sophomores Alex Kagan (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Michael Zayneh (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Heritage Academy) remained perfect in dual competition as a tandem with an 8-3 win at the top flight. Junior Matt Rau (Castle Pines, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and freshman Michael Fellman (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) followed with an 8-3 win at the second flight.
 
In singles play, each of Gettysburg's top three players won in straight-sets. Kagan polished off a 6-4, 6-2 win over Avi Perera at No. 1 and Fellman ran past Dan Blumenthal 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Zayneh posted a pair of 6-2 decisions over Santo Carroccia at the third position. Rau closed out the victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Gettysburg and Drew met on the tennis court for the first time in three decades. The Bullets improved to 6-3 all-time against the Rangers.

Match Recap
Head Coach Ali Flores '08 mixed up the lineup for the day's second match, but the Bullets showed no signs of slowing down with a dominating 9-0 win over the Pioneers. Kagan and senior Max Levy (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) paired up for the first time and grinded out an 8-6 win over Spencer Hall and Elivh Perez at the No. 1 position. Sophomores Chase Burker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and Dylan Weber (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury Township) won 8-4 at the second flight, while junior Bryce Weigartz (Hayes, Va./Rappahannock) and senior Alec Shalk (Milton, Del./Smyra) won 8-1 at No. 3.
 
Zayneh handily won his singles match at the top position, dropping only two games on the way to a straight-set win (6-2, 6-0) in front of his hometown crowd. Rau was the only other repeat singles winner from the match against Drew and he won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.
 
Levy posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 and closing out the sweep with wins were senior Zach LaChance (Pittstown, N.J./Delware Valley) at No. 2 (6-4, 6-4), freshman Hayden Strittmatter (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0), and sophomore Jeffrey Seybolt (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Gettysburg had never met Marietta on the tennis court prior to today.

The Bullets return to the court against Lake Forest College on Wednesday, March 9, at 8:30 a.m.
