Softball Depleted by Home Runs in Swarthmore Sweep

Carlie Goldstein hit a key home run in the nightcap

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Gettysburg College were unable to get past Swarthmore College in a Centennial Conference softball sweep. The Garnet prevailed by scores of 10-6 and 7-1 to stretch the Bullets' losing streak to four games.

In the opener, Gettysburg (12-12, 3-5 CC) came back from an early deficit to tie the game at 6-6. Swarthmore tacked on four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to notch the win.

Freshman Ellianna Hopple (Collegeville, Pa./The Episcopal Academy) went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Junior Jess Campana (Brick, N.J./Saint John Vianney) and sophomore Giovanni Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) factored in with a pair of singles.

Freshman Carlie Goldstein (Verona, N.J./Verona) hit a home run as part of a two-RBI game.

Freshman starting pitcher Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) gave up three earned runs and four hits in three innings pitched. Junior Jasmin Herrera (Hollywood, Fla./Cooper City) took the loss after striking out four in 3 1/3 innings. Meghan Hughes pitched two-third of an inning.

Trailing 3-0, Gettysburg chipped into Swarthmore's lead with a run in the bottom of the third. Bailey Quinn (Hanford, Calif./Robinson Secondary) walked, and Komst advanced her to second base on a single to center field. Following a Julia Smith (Marydel, Del./Queen Anne's County) sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position, Campana hit a single to right field that put the first Bullets run on the scoreboard.

Goldstein hit a home run that brought in two runs that put the Bullets within one run in the fourth.

The Bullets evened the score in the bottom of the fifth. The first two batters reached via fielding errors. After Olivia Moser (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) loaded the bases with a one-out walk, Hopple cleared the ducks on the pond with a double into right field to make it a 6-6 game.

Swarthmore's Maya Estera hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth. Sam Hastings hit a bases-loaded triple in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Swarthmore scored all seven of its runs in a seven-run fourth inning, all but one of which came by way of the long ball. Gwen Glatz and Kate Hart broke open scoreless game in the fourth with solo shots. Alexandra Si hit a grand slam to cap the barrage of Garnet scoring.

Gettysburg scored its lone run in the sixth inning. Katherine Speltz (East Greenwich, R.I./Moses Brown School) reached home on a successful double steal.

The Bullets had just two hits. Hopple reached twice by walks.

Audrey Wright (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) tossed three innings of scoreless relief. She allowed three hits and two walks.
