Bullets and Shoremen Split a Conference Twinbill

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College and Washington College split a Centennial Conference doubleheader this afternoon at Kirchhoff Field. Gettysburg won the opener 4-2 while Washington got out to a 13-0 lead in game two and withstood an 11-run seventh inning by the Bullets for a 16-12 win.

Gettysburg is now 16-18 overall and 7-7 in the Centennial Conference. Washington is 20-13 overall and 6-6 in league play. 

In game one, a JR McCloskey (Huntington, N.Y./Chaminade) sacrifice fly scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning for Gettysburg and Aaron Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) scored the insurance run on a ground out in the eighth.

The Bullets got on the board first when Tristan Neels (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker) drew a bases loaded walk in the third. Matt Muir's (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) ground out in the fifth scored Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Preparatory) from third base to give Gettysburg a 2-0 lead.

Washington pinch hitter Jack Kingman laced a two-run single to right field in the top of the sixth to tie the game.

Gettysburg's bullpen tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings to help preserve the win. Ken Spadaccini (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) (3-1) earned the win in relief after he scattered two hits in one inning of work. Brett Leighton (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) picked up his third save of the year as he tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout.

Decker hit two singles and scored two runs for the Bullets. Preston Toothman (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone) also collected two singles.

Ethan Osgood (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Shoremen. He worked two-thirds of an inning in relief and allowed one run on two hits.

Joe Curtin finished with a pair of singles.   

In game two, Washington held a 13-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but Gettysburg sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs on nine hits to get back into the game. Aaron Kirby (Sandy Hook, Conn./St. Joseph) hit a two-run double and a two-run single in the inning. Neels added a two-run single and then two batters later Jack Pistner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came off the bench and cleared the bases with a double to cut the deficit to 13-9.

An Andrew Donlan (Haddam, Conn./Avon Old Farms) single to right field scored Decker from third and Gettysburg trailed 13-12.

The Shoremen scored three times in the top of the ninth to pull away.

Anthony Sofran (4-1) weathered the rally to earn the win for Washington. He allowed five runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.   

Max Ruvo went 3-for-4 with a home run, scored two runs and he knocked in three more. CJ Gillmer went 3-for-6 with a home run and he had four runs batted in. Curtin collected three hits, including a double, he scored four runs and had three RBI.

Teo Torrado (New York, N.Y./Polytech Prep Country Day) (3-2) took the loss for the Bullets. He allowed five runs, only two of which were earned, and allowed six hits.

Kirby finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and he scored a run. Pistner went 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored, and three runs driven in. Donlan came off the bench to get two hits, including a double, with two runs scored and two RBI. Muir collected a pair of singles.

Up next for Gettysburg is a home game against Centennial Conference rival Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Kirchhoff Field.
