Bullets Plate Go-Ahead Runs in the Eighth to Down Green Terror

Gettysburg takes advantage of five McDaniel errors

WESTMINSTER, Md. — Jack Pistner hit a two-run, go-ahead single in the top of the eighth inning to propel Gettysburg College to an 8-6 victory over McDaniel College Tuesday in Centennial Conference baseball action. The Bullets came back from a one-run deficit, thanks to five Green Terror errors.

With the game evened at 6-6, Pistner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) drove in both game-winning RBIs. The Bullets put the first two batters of the game on base, thanks to a Kyle Miller (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) walk and a McDaniel fielding error. Tristan Neels (San Diego, Calif. / Francis W. Parker) set up the go-ahead hit with a sacrifice bunt that moved both Miller and Matt Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) to scoring position. Following an intentional walk, Pistner found a hole in the right side to bring in both runners.

Gettysburg (12-11, 3-0 CC) capitalized on McDaniel's aggressive baserunning to get out of a jam in the bottom of the frame. On a one-out single through the left side, left fielder David Preziuso (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy), catcher JR McCloskey (Huntingdon, N.Y./Chaminade) and Muir teamed up for a rare 7-2-6-2 putout at the plate. McDaniel's attempted to score on a pickle in the middle infielder, and McCloskey laid the tag to end the threat.

McCloskey led the Bullets offensively with a 3 for 4 performance with one run scored. Miller went 2 for 4 with two runs, two RBIs and a double. Pistner finished with three RBIs and two stolen bases.

Ian Gannaway (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) turned in a relief outing of five scoreless innings to notch his second victory of the season. Gannaway struck out three, allowing just four hits and three walks.

To close out the game, Tyler Lizell [Naples, Fla./Upper Dublin (Pa.)] captured his third save with one strikeout. After allowing the first two batters to reach, Lizell forced an unsuccessful bunt attempt and a fielder's choice. Lizell rang up the final out with the potential tying run in scoring position.

McDaniel (15-10, 0-3 CC) went ahead by three runs in the opening inning. The Green Terror had run-scoring doubles from Tyler Yohn and Jake Smith.

The Bullets responded with a five-run third inning. Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) and Preston Toothman (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone) opened the scoring barrage with back-to-back singles. After a hit by pitch, Miller knocked a two-run double to left center. Muir hit a game-tying single to score McCloskey, and an error on Neels' sacrifice bunt left the bases loaded and chased starting pitcher H. Darke.

Another error gave the Bullets their first lead of the game. Pitsner capped the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Muir for a 5-3 Gettsyburg advantage.

McDaniel added one run in the bottom half and two runs in the fourth inning. Nine-hole hitter Jack Bayne hit a solo homer as part of a four-hit effort on the afternoon to even the score. The Green Terror took a 5-4 lead on a balk.

Gettsysburg added a run in the fourth. Pistner led off with a walk, and Preziuso reached via a fielder's choice that yielded a throwing error. The Bullets plated Pistner's run on a double play.

Four of Gettysburg's runs were unearned.

The Bullets remain atop the Centennial standings in a tie with Franklin & Marshall College.

Gettysburg will welcome the Green Terror in a second game of the home-and-home on Friday. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Kirchhoff Field.
