THE LEADERS
•
Katie Fullowan (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) led the Bullets with two goals and two assists to go with six draw controls.
•
Lily Macatee (Street, Md./North Harford) paced the defense with four ground balls, one caused turnover, and six draw controls.
•
Jordan Basso (Rye, N.Y./Rye) added two goals on three shots.
FOR THE FOES
• Kaitlyn Hunsinger earned the win in the cage for the Sea Gulls, with seven stops.
• Riley Hartman scored three goals and tallied two assists to lead the offense.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Salisbury scored their first goal early in the first period, causing a turnover and bringing it to the other end of the field, where Mary Hanzsche fed to Leah Vilov to put the Sea Gulls on the board. Gettysburg made it a tie game just over a minute later, as
Julia Daly (McLean, Va./Langley) scored her first of two on the day, and Fullowan tallied her first of two assists. Salisbury mounted a 3-1 lead over the next two minutes, with Riley Hartman scoring her first of the day, and Erin Scannell converting on a free-position attempt, to force a Gettysburg timeout. Out of the timeout, the Gettysburg defense worked to turn the ball over, and both teams exchanged shots that were saved. With 2:40 left in the first quarter, Fullowan scored her first of the day to make it a one-goal game.
• Salisbury regained their two-goal lead less than 90 seconds into the second quarter, as Emma Skoglund grabbed a ball from Mary Hanzsche for a 4-2 Sea Gulls lead. Gettysburg answered just over 30 seconds later, with Fullowan winning the draw and Basso firing one in for the Bullets' third goal. Both defenses worked hard in the next seven minutes, each causing several turnovers. Each team managed one lone shot in the scoreless stretch, but goalies
Gillian Cortese (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and Hunsinger were there. With six minutes left in the half, Salisbury cleared the ball and Scannell fired one in for a 5-3 Sea Gulls advantage. Salisbury won the next draw, but Cortese corralled a shot to give Gettysburg the offensive opportunity. Fullowan converted with 4:12 left in the half to make it a 5-4 game. A Sea Gulls foul less than two minutes later gave
Caroline Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) a free position attempt, which she converted on to make it a tie game heading into halftime.
• Macatee won the first draw of the second half, and a Fullowan shot missed high before Salisbury was awarded a free position attempt just under three minutes into the half. Hartman found her second goal of the game on the attempt to regain the one-goal lead. Both teams turned over the ball before Hartman found Miranda Mears with 7:10 showing in the third for a 7-5 Sea Gulls lead. Macatee again won the draw control, giving Gettysburg an opportunity, and after a shot missed high,
Gabi Connor (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) picked up a feed from Fullowan for Gettysburg's sixth of the day. With only 78 seconds left in the third quarter, Sullivan found Daly for her second goal of the day to tie the game for the first time in the second half, 7-all.
• As they had done before, Salisbury scored a goal in the first 90 seconds of the fourth period to again mount a one-goal lead. A Salisbury yellow card and foul gave Gettysburg a free position attempt, but Hunsinger put a stop to the shot. With 9:16 left in the game, Meridith Price cleared the ball up and drove in for Salisbury's ninth goal of the game, forcing a Gettysburg timeout. Out of the timeout, a Salisbury turnover and Macatee ground ball gave Gettysburg an offensive attempt, and a foul made it a free position one. However, once again, Sea Gulls goalie Hunsinger corralled the ball to maintain their two-goal lead. A Salisbury yellow card created a man-up opportunity, which almost expired before another Sea Gulls yellow card was issued the second the first yellow card was released. On the second yellow card, the Bullets were awarded a free position shot, which
Jordan Basso converted on to bring the Bullets back within one, 9-8. The Bullets couldn't catch the Sea Gulls, however, as Hartman fed a ball to Vilov for Salisbury's final goal of the game in the last minute of play, earning them the 10-8 win.
