THE FACTS
Wheaton (Ill.) (3-4) 8, Gettysburg (6-2) 3
What: Non-conference baseball game
When: Tuesday, March 7
Where: Fort Pierce, Fla.
THE SKINNY STORY
The ballgame was tied up 2-all as late as the fifth inning, but a four-run bottom of the sixth by Wheaton created a lead that was ultimately too big to overcome.
THE LEADERS
•
Aaron Kirby (Sandy Hook, Conn./St. Joseph) went 2-for-3 at the plate, including a hit that sailed over the left side of the fence for a home run.
• Prestan Toothman (Orlando, Fla./William R. Boone) hit a double in the eighth inning.
•
Tristan Neels (San Diego, Calif./Francis W. Parker) added one hit and scored another of the Bullets' runs.
FOR THE FOES
• Pitcher Nate Barker pitched five innings with as many strikeouts to pick up the win.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• In the top of the first, a
Kyle Miller (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) single and
Matthew Peipher (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) and Wheaton error helped bring in
David Preziuso (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) for the Bullets' first run of the game. During Wheaton's turn to bat, Kyle Wu hit a single to center and Ben Weaver doubled to bring Wu in for the Thunder's first of the game. Matthias Haggerty was walked, and a single and another walk scored a second run for the Thunder in the bottom of the first.
• The defense for both teams made short work of the next two innings, as the score remained 2-1, Wheaton advantage. Pitcher
James Weedon (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Chaminade) struck out two of the three batters in the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, an
Aaron Kirby single and
Mabret Levant (Lakeville, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) sacrifice put runners at second and third, and a walk allowed the Bullets to score their second run of the game. No runs were scored for the next two innings.
• In the bottom of the sixth, a Bullets error, single, and a walk loaded the bases, and a double by the Thunder brought in two runs to give them a 4-2 lead. Another walk loaded the bases again, and a single earned Wheaton two more runs for a 6-2 advantage.
• Designated hitter Kirby found the Bullets final run of the evening in the top of the eighth with a huge hit over the left field fence, to make the score 6-3. In the bottom of the eighth, two singles and an error brought in the final two runs for Wheaton to give them the 8-3 win.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Wheaton outhit the Bullets, 11-8.
• Starting pitcher Weedon struck out five batters in his five innings of work.
