THE SKINNY STORY
Dickinson scored four times in the top of the seventh inning in game one for an 8-4 win then jumped out to an 8-1 lead before sweeping Gettysburg with an identical 8-4 game-two score.
THE LEADERS
•
Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led the Bullets with five hits on the day.
•
Julia Smith (Marydel, Md./Queen Anne's County) added four hits, including a 3-for-4 game one.
FOR THE FOES
• Emily Whelan led the Red Devils with four hits, including three in the opener.
• Lindsay Kucker picked up the wins in both games, pitching two innings of scoreless relief in game one before going 5 2/3 in the nightcap.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• A one-out Jane Lloyd triple in the top of the first inning of game one on a ball that got past a diving fielder, Eden Blanker dropped down a sacrifice for a 1-0 lead.
• Abby Kohen and Emily Whelan led off the second with back-to-back singles before Brooke Espenshade was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout and a fielder's choice cut down a run at the plate, back-to-back walks forced in two more runs for a 3-0 lead.
•
Julia Smith started the home fourth with a triple before scoring on a
Giovanna Komst one-out single to make it 3-1.
• The Red Devils got that run back in the top of the fifth after a two-out fielding error and a popup just behind the first-base bag started a rally. A hit batter loaded the bases before Laila Gwathmey drew a walk to force in a run.
• Smith once again started a rally in the home sixth, poking a double to left.
Olivia Moser (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) followed with a single up the middle to make it 4-2. After a Komst double put two in scoring position,
Allegra DeCandia (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) doubled home pinch-runners
Katherine Speltz (East Greenwich, R.I./Moses Brown School) and
Gianna Peralta (Gillette, N.J./Union Catholic) to tie the game at 4-all with no outs. The Bullets reloaded the bases on a two-out walk and single but Lindsay Kucker got a groundout to keep it a tie game.
• Zoe Kleeblatt led off the seventh with a single before moving up a base on a sacrifice. After a Whelan single put runners at the corners, she stole second and Espenshade drew a walk to load the bases. An error allowed the go-ahead run to score before Devon Kueny had an infield single to score another run and Lloyd singled home a third run in the inning. With one out, Paige Hahn was hit by a pitch to make it an 8-4 game.
• In game two, Hahn led off the fourth with a double – the first hit for either team in the nightcap. A one-out Abby Kohan single up the middle put runners at the corners before a wild pitch plated pinch-runner Emma Varella. Another single, a passed ball and Espenshade sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 game.
• Komst singled to lead off the bottom of the inning before stealing second and scoring on a Moser double off the third-base bag. Three straight groundouts, however, kept it a one-run game.
• Dickinson scored three in each the fifth and sixth innings. Jen Klepfer had a two-run double after back-to-back one-out walks in the sixth for the big knock.
• Smith led off the bottom of the sixth with a single before Komst beat out a bunt single. Moser followed with a double to the gap to score both runners and make it an 8-3 game.
• A two-out error scored Smith in the bottom of the seventh before a walk loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate. Kaylie Renner, however, got a ground ball to preserve the sweep.
