Gettysburg vies for CC title starting Tuesday at home

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg will host the play-in game of 2023 Centennial Conference (CC) softball championship tournament on Tuesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

The Bullets (24-13-1, 11-5 CC), the No. 4 seed in the new five-team format, hosts Swarthmore (20-16, 8-8 CC) in a single-elimination game. The winner will advance to the first round of the double-elimination tournament at No. 1 Ursinus (27-12, 12-3 CC) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Second-seeded Dickinson (23-13, 12-4 CC) will host third-seeded Washington (Md.) (19-17-1, 11-4-1 CC) in the day's other first-round game, which will also begin at 4:30 p.m. The four remaining teams will all travel to Collegeville/Carlisle for the remainder of the double-elimination tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Games being at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The tournament's champion will earn the CC's automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division III tournament, slated to begin at 16 regionals sites on May 18-20. The NCAA field will be announced on Monday, May 15 at 1 p.m.

The Bullets are seeking their sixth conference title. It is the 15th tournament appearance for Gettysburg. The Bullets also in search of their fifth NCAA tournament bid.

In the regular-season meeting between Gettysburg and Swarthmore, the Garnet swept the series in Swarthmore on Apr. 1. The Garnet took game one 2-0 before winning game two 9-1 in five innings.

Junior Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) leads the conference with a .475 batting average. She has a team-best 48 hits, including seven doubles, to go with 20 RBIs and 25 runs scored. She is also slugging .545 on the year and has drawn 15 walks for a .542 on-base percentage. In total, seven of the Bullets primary lineup are hitting .289 or better this season. Sophomore Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) has a team-best .613 slugging percentage, roping eight doubles, four triples and six home runs among her 39 base knocks.

Sophomore Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) leads the conference with a 1.60 earned-run average and 117 strikeouts. Her 14 victories is also tops in the CC. She is 14-5 with two saves in 118 1/3 innings pitched. She has walked just 38 in her 22 appearances that includes 18 starts, 13 complete games and six shutouts. Junior Megan Hughes (Woodstock, Md./Marriotts Ridge) is 6-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 72 1/3 innings of work. She has 51 strikeouts and two shutouts in her three complete games. She also has one save.
