THE LEADERS
•
Catherine Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and
Kylie Ulrich (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the attack with nine kills each.
•
Chelsea O'Leary (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) put up three aces along with 19 digs.
•
Sophie Nasir (Covina, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) tallied 16 assists and two aces.
FOR THE FOES
• Abby Diehl had 19 assists, 11 digs, two aces, and two blocks to lead the Spartans.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• A very competitive first set saw the teams go almost point-for-point, notching ten ties. After the first tie at 6-all, each team put together three two-point runs to make the score 12-all. After a service error by each team, the Spartans capitalized on a Bullets' error and used two kills to give themselves a two-point edge, but Gettysburg immediately responded with a three-point spurt of their own, powered by a block by
Mary Huegel (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) and
Kylie Ulrich, as well as a kill by Ulrich. The teams traded points again to give Gettysburg a one-point lead before York overtook it, 18-17. From there, Gettysburg strung together kills by Ulrich,
Gianna Galli (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest), and
Halle Feth (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) to take a 21-18 advantage. The Bullets got to set point via a
Catherine Holtz kill and
Brooke Lauletta (Coatesville, Pa./Downingtown East) block, but a kill and ace by the Spartans brought them within closing, 24-23. However, an attack error by York sealed the first set in favor of the Bullets, 25-23.
• The second set resulted in another 25-23 score that came about much like the first. The teams notched two early ties before York hit three kills in a row to take an 8-4 set lead. Three straight points by the Bullets brought them back within one, and a 3-3 run made it 11-10 in York's favor. The Spartans worked to widen the gap with an ace, kill, and two Bullets errors in a row to give them a five-point cushion, but a 7-2 run by Gettysburg, fueled by Spartans errors, tied the game 17-all. Gettysburg and York traded points, tying again at 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23-all, before an Ulrich kill and
Sophie Nasir service ace won the Bullets the nail biter second set, 25-23.
• Gettysburg started the third and final set on a tear, getting out to a 7-0 lead.
Chelsea O'Leary notched three aces and Huegel killed the ball once in the stretch. A Bullets error gave the Spartans their first point of the set, but two more Huegel kills got Gettysburg back in control. Gettysburg widened the gap to as big as 13-4 before the Spartans put together a 4-0 run to bring them within five points, however, Gettysburg responded quickly with a big 6-0 spurt to go up 11 points on the Spartans, 19-8.
Callie Pidoriano (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) hit two aces in a row to cap the run, while Holtz and Galli each had a kill and a block. A 5-1 Gettysburg run put them at set point, although York managed one more kill in the match, before Ulrich pounded the ball one last time to finish the match with a 25-12 set score and 3-0 match sweep for the Bullets.
