Overton hired as Gettysburg’s first full-time strength and conditioning coach

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Reggie Overton has joined the Gettysburg staff as the department's first full-time head strength and conditioning coach, announced by Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Campus Recreation Mike Mattia.

Overton joins the Bullets with nearly a decade of strength and conditioning experience, including spending the last year as the head strength and conditioning coach at Virginia State University.

"We are very excited to have Reggie as our first full-time head strength and conditioning coach for Gettysburg Athletics," Mattia said. "He brings experience in building a strength and conditioning program from the ground up, and he showed us throughout the interview process his ability to connect well with student-athletes and coaches from all sports. He brings a blend of traditional techniques while incorporating sport-specific training that includes utilizing newly established technology to help continually improve individual and overall team performance and injury prevention. The addition of Reggie should help all of our teams reach the next level."

Named the head strength and conditioning coach at Virginia State in August 2023, Overton worked to establish a pipeline of internal interns for academic credit as well as pursing multiple sources of grant funding to expand the staff. He established a training plan for multiple first-year programs and updated and improved policies and procedures for the strength and conditioning department. He also developed a plan for a fueling station for Trojan athletes.

Prior to that, he spent time as the Director of Performance at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology that included overseeing strength and conditioning for football and women's basketball. He was also the director of strength and conditioning at D'Youville, programming for all 15 varsity programs and assisted with the design of a new athlete-only weight room.

"I'd like to thank Mike Mattia and the search committee for their time and effort during the interview process," Overton said. "The amount of interest and care, from all of the parties involved, stood out the entire time. From the student-athletes to the search committee, it was incredibly impactful to hear and see that the entire department is on the same page about taking the next steps to pursue greatness as a whole. I'm grateful for the opportunity to join the athletic department at Gettysburg College and I look forward to contributing to the future success of the department."

Overton also spent time at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, UNC-Wilmington, Buffalo and Cincinnati in the strength and conditioning departments of each institution. He was IUP's first full-time strength and conditioning coach and served as the head strength and conditioning coach for no fewer than eight programs at Wilmington.

Prior to his full-time roles, Overton served as interns at Louisiana-Lafayette, Kentucky, Montana and Robert Morris.

Overton played football at the collegiate level for the Mount Union, competing as a defensive back for the Raiders.

He earned his bachelor of science in exercise science with a minor in health at Mount Union in 2012. He earned a master of science in sport management from Florida in 2019 and began work on his doctorate of education in kinesiology through UNC-Greensboro in August.
