Hot start carries Gettysburg past Ursinus

THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg, ranked 24th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, shot 58.8 percent in the first quarter, building a 12-point lead en route to a 67-48 win at Ursinus.

THE LEADERS
Alayna Arnolie (Vienna, Va./James Madison) scored 14 of her game-high 24 points in the opening stanza while adding six rebounds.
Mackenzie Szlosek (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) added 15 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

FOR THE FOES
• Chinwe Irondi led the Bears with 17 points and eight rebounds.
• Madison Smith chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Alayna Arnolie opened the game with a 3-pointer just over a minute into the game before Ursinus clawed back even on a Chinwe Irondi turnaround with 6:45 showing. Mackenzie Szlosek, however, responded with a triple of her own to give Gettysburg the lead for good 23 seconds later. After Sarah DiLello cut the deficit to one, 11 points from Arnolie keyed an 18-2 run over a 4-minute, 50-second stretch that opened up a 24-7 lead with 1:16 to play in the first quarter. The Bears tallied the final five points of the period to close to within 24-12 after 10 minutes.
• Gettysburg, though, opened the second period with six straight points to stretch the lead to 31-12 just over three minutes into the quarter. Nine straight points from Ursinus trimmed the deficit to 10 with 4:37 showing before the teams traded points over the remainder of the half and the Bullets took a 38-27 lead into the locker room.
• Leading 43-32, AB Holsinger (Crozet, Va./Langley) hit jumper with 5:42 on the clock and Szlosek tallied seven in a row to stretch the advantage to 20 for the first time just 2:21 later. The Bears scored four of the final five points of the quarter to pull within 53-36 entering the final period.
• Ironde trimmed the deficit to 15 just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter before Arnolie hit a trey nearly a minute later. The Bears once again closed to 16 on a Madison Smith layup with 6:36 to play but the hosts could get no closer.

• The Bullets shot 42.6 percent from the floor for the game while holding the Bears to 31.6 percent.
