THE SKINNY STORY
The Gettysburg defense allowed just one shot on goal in the first half while the offense built a 7-0 lead en route to a 12-2 victory over Stevenson in the season opener.
THE LEADERS
•
Jordan Basso (Rye, N.Y./Rye) led the second-ranked Bullets with four goals and two assists.
•
Julie Breedveld (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) did it on both ends of the field with two goals on two shots, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
•
Emily Seymour (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) added four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
FOR THE FOES
• Kara Yarusso led the Mustangs with a goal, two ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Neither attack could get much going early until
Jordan Basso wrapped around the cage and snuck one past the Stevenson keeper for the game's first tally with 7:35 showing on the first-quarter clock. Basso then found
Sophie Showers (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) for a 2-0 lead just over three minutes later.
Emily Crane (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) found a cutting Basso to make it 3-0 with 5.6 seconds remaining in the opening period.
• Midway through the second quarter,
Julie Breedveld finished a pass from
Julia Daly (McLean, Va./Langley) before Basso found Breedveld 95 seconds later to make it 5-0 with 6:02 on the clock. Basso wrapped up her hat trick with 4:45 on the clock before Daly one-timed a
Sophie Smith (Great Falls, Va./Langley) pass with 3:29 remaining until halftime for the 7-0 lead.
•
Caroline Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) dented the scoreboard just 1:21 into the third quarter before Basso made it a four-goal day with a solo run at the 9:18 mark.
Meghan Crane (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) made it a 10-goal lead with her first collegiate tally at the 6:43 mark then added a second just 2:22 later. Sullivan hit Smith in the final 90 seconds of the quarter for a 12-0 lead entering the final quarter.
• Sophia Murray broke up the shutout with 8:27 remaining before Kara Yarusso capped the scoring with 5:06 on the clock.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Gettysburg finished with a 29-9 advantage in shots, including 26-4 through the first three quarters.
• The Bullets picked up 23 ground balls and recorded 13 caused turnovers.
