THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg, ranked sixth in the latest ILWomen/IWLCA Div. III coaches' poll, trailed No. 20 Trinity (Conn.) by as many as three goals before rallying in the third quarter to tie the game at 10-all after 45 minutes. The Bullets then reeled off the final three goals of the game after another brief Bantam advantage to capture a 13-11 win in the second round of the NCAA Div. III women's lacrosse tournament.
THE LEADERS
•
Jordan Basso (Rye, N.Y./Rye) led the Bullets with eight points, tying her season high on a season-best six assists to go with two goals that included the final tally of the game. She also had three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
•
Julia Daly (McLean, Va./Langley) scored a game-high five goals.
•
Caroline Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) chipped in two goals and three assists to go with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
FOR THE FOES
• Alex Lesko led the Bantams with four goals and an assist.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• After an exchange of turnovers in the early going, Trinity got on the board first when Alex Lesko finished a pass from Brooke Kurtz for a 1-0 lead with 10:25 remaining in the opener period.
Jordan Basso then found
Julia Daly in front of the cage just 35 seconds later to even the game at 1-all. Caroline Lally needed less than a minute to reclaim the lead for the Bantams before Basso found
Caroline Sullivan 12 second after the ensuing draw. Daly then needed just 12 more seconds to deposit a Sullivan feed for the Bullets' first lead of the game with 8:30 on the clock. Kaeley Zito finished a solo run with 2:40 showing to make it a 3-all game after one quarter.
• Grace Denious put the guests in front by one just 11 ticks into the second quarter before Daly responded, completing her hat trick with 13:33 remaining. Denious found Lesko to go back up by one 11 seconds later. Basso, however, dished off to
Julie Breedveld (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) and Daly 12 seconds apart to turn the one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead with 12:43 on the clock. Molly McGuckin found the back of the net with 10:59 showing, tying the game at 6-all and starting a four-goal Trinity run over the next 4:45.
Nina Marra (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) got in the scoring column, finishing Sullivan's second helper of the day to halt the run with 1:12 remaining and close the deficit to two at the break.
•
Sophie Smith (Great Fall, Va./Langley) needed just 25 seconds of the third quarter to finish a quick pass from Basso and trim the margin to one. After Kurtz and Lesko connected once again with 10:11 remaining, Basso finished a solo run with 4:24 showing and the Sullivan buried a free-position shot from the top of the arc just 37 seconds later to tie the game at 10-all.
• Kurtz gave the Bantams an 11-10 edge with 8:25 to play in the fourth quarter. Out of a free-position that was awarded to Marra, the sophomore passed back to Sullivan, who found a cutting Daly and she finished over the top to retie the game with 6:33 on the clock. Basso tracked down a loose ball on the right side and then hit Marra in the middle of the field and she put it home for a 12-11 lead with 4:37 remaining. Just over a minute later, Basso wrapped around the crease and five-hole for the hosts' first two-goal lead of the game. The defense held from there, including a pair of critical saves from
Gillian Cortese (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) in rapid succession with less than 90 seconds to play to give the senior netminder 10 for the day.
