William Smith scored five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and Gettysburg never got closer than three the rest of the way in an 18-10 NCAA Div. III women's lacrosse third-round victory.

THE REST OF THE STORY

Julie Breedveld (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) staked Gettysburg to a 1-0 lead, driving the left side with 12:25 to play in the opening quarter. A Natalie Daniels free-position goal 69 seconds later tied the game at 1-all and started a five-goal run that included a Molly Davis free-position tally with 7:12 remaining for a 2-1 lead and a second Daniels score 70 seconds after that. Maddie Montgomery and Davis scored 13 seconds apart in the final minute of the period for a 5-1 lead.

Emily Crane finished a
Caroline Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) pass for the first goal of the second quarter with 11:12 showing but the Herons responded with a pair of goals within 69 seconds for a 7-2 lead with 9:11 on the clock. Crane finished a
Jordan Basso (Rye, N.Y./Rye) with 7:59 showing but Taryn Luzi responded a minute later. Off a William Smith turnover, Basso found
Julia Daly (McLean, Va./Langley) for a fast-break tally with 5:56 showing. The Herons, however, scored the final three of the first half to take an 11-4 lead to the break.
• Two William Smith goals on either side of a Crane free-position tally midway through the third quarter made it a 15-5 game after three quarters.
• Crane and Allie McGinty traded goals in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter before free-position markers from
Lauren O'Connell and Daly closed the deficit to eight with 8:30 to play. Goals from Basso and Daly 19 seconds apart made it a 17-10 game with 4:23 to play but Montgomery thwarted any further rally with the final marker at the 2:13 mark.
THE INSIDE STORY

Jordan Basso finished her career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 360 points, which includes 228 goals – second all-time.
Caroline Sullivan added 240 points in her career and the dynamic duo finish as the most prolific scoring classmates in program history with 600 points.
