THE SKINNY STORY
A full 60 minutes and two 10-minute overtimes were not enough. Neither was a first full round of five shootout attempts. It took until the sixth shootout attempts for No. 23 Haverford to earn a 2-1 win over Gettysburg.
THE LEADERS
•
Cassie DeBlieck (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) scored the lone goal in regulation for the Bullets.
FOR THE FOES
• Erica Pardon had the winning shootout goal for the Fords.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Louisa Coughlin opened the scoring for Haverford, flicking in a quick tap from Erica Pardon for a 1-0 lead at the 18:44 mark. Just over 10 minutes later,
Jane Mezzanotte (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) sent a ball in from the left side that
Sabrina Post (Poquoson, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) fired at the post and
Cassie DeBlieck was waiting behind the keeper to tap it in and tie the game.
• Both teams had opportunities to end the game in regulation but could not find the game-winner before the squads split up overtimes with the better looks. Haverford had the best looks in the first extra session while Gettysburg had the better attempts in the second.
• After the Bullets missed their first attempt of the shootout, Pardon stepped up and made it count for a 1-0 advantage. The teams combined to miss their next three attempts before DeBlieck got the equalizer in the top of the fourth. A save, shot just wide and violation sent the shootout to sudden victory. Pardon got her attempt to go before Steph Ionescu had a kick save in the bottom half to earn the win.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Haverford finished with a 15-12 edge in shots and 12-9 edge in penalty corners.
•
Emilia Saccento (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) made nine saves in the game for Gettysburg while Steph Ionescu had six.
