Fourth quarter lifts Messiah over Gettysburg

THE SKINNY STORY
Messiah outscored Gettysburg 24-18 in the fourth quarter to record an 83-77 win.

THE LEADERS
Skylar Reale (Warren, N.J./Morristown Beard) led the Bullets with a career-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds.

FOR THE FOES
• Liv Monturo led the Falcons with 30 points and eight rebounds. She shot 13 of 25 from the floor.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Trailing 5-4 early, baskets from three different Gettysburg players gave the visitors a five-points lead with 3:24 to play in the first quarter. A pair of buckets from Brooke Fenchel closed the deficit to one a minute later before the Bullets netted seven of the next eight points to open up a 17-11 lead. Liv Monturo hit layup just before the first quarter ended to close the margin to 19-16 after 10 minutes.
• An Ava O'Neil (Chevy Chase, Md./St. John's College) triple stretched the lead back to six at 27-21 with 7:28 to play in the second quarter. The lead remained at six before two Ainsley Bell free throws with 6:08 showing sparked a 10-4 run that tied the game at 33-all with 4:17 on the clock. An EmmyFaith Wood jumper made it 39-37 for the hosts with a minute to play before Skylar Reale hit the second of two free throws in the waning seconds to close to the margin to one at the break.
• Five points from Monturo in the opening minute of the third quarter extended the lead to 43-38. A Briana Robles (Westchester, N.Y./Poly Prep) 3-pointer capped an 8-0 counter that gave the Bullets a two-point edge with 6:56 on the clock. Gettysburg opened up a lead as large as four before Messiah drew the game even at 59-all to enter the final quarter.
Amanda Rapel (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) hit a layup with 9:21 to play in the final quarter for a two-point lead but Messiah went on a 9-0 burst to take a 68-61 lead with 6:58 showing. The lead remained between five and eight until a Reale jumper and Rapel 3-pointer made it a 73-70 game with 3:25 to play. The teams traded baskets until the Falcons hit all four free throws in the final 22 seconds to capture the six-point victory.

THE INSIDE STORY
Kimberly Hopkins (Baldwin, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) added 12 points, six rebounds and three assist for Gettysburg while Briana Robles chipped in 10 points.
• The Bullets finished with a 42-27 rebounding margin.

Gettysburg returns to action in the Centennial Conference opener at home against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
