THE REST OF THE STORY
• After a
Gabriel Diaz return set up the offense at its own 46, Gettysburg marched the opening drive 54 yards down the field in nine plays over nearly five minutes.
Danny Bonato (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) capped the march with a six-yard run off tackle for a 7-0 lead with 9:55 showing. Ursinus responded with good field position of its own with the offense taking the field at its own 35. The drive marched 10 plays to the Gettysburg 13 before
Justin Bardo and
Scott Sabol (Cary, N.C./Green Level) met at the quarterback for a 15-yard sack to force a 46-yard Ben Kiedrowski field goal to make it 7-3 with 4:12 on the clock.
• After a
Dayton Williams Jr. (Henrico, Va./Kenston Forest School) interception off a
Jamison Speikes (Frederick, Md./Urbana) tipped ball, Gettysburg moved 44 yards in 10 plays. On second-and-goal from the five, Diaz took the ball on a reverse and hit a wide-open
Sean Clark in the end zone for a 14-3 lead with 12:13 to play in the second. After an exchange of three-and-outs,
Danny Vanarsdale (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) pinned Ursinus at the one-yard line with a 53-yard punt. Facing a third-and-nine, the Bears got out of the shadow of its their own goal line and proceeded to put together a 17-play drive that ate up half of the quarter. After a first-and-goal at the nine, the Gettysburg defense limited Ursinus to just five yards on the next three plays to force a 21-yard field goal and make it 14-6 at the break.
• The Bears moved 68 yards in 11 plays on their opening possession of the second half. Jason Bernard capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 9:18 showing. Gettysburg responded with a 10-play drive of its own, moving 75 yards in just shy of five minutes. Clark returned the favor to Diaz and found him in the corner of the end zone on third down for a four-yard score to go back in front by seven with 4:20 on the clock.
• Machado found Ryder Zulkowski for a six-yard touchdown on the fourth play of the fourth quarter to draw back even at 21-all.
Isaac Parks-Gill (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) hit a 37-yard field goal on the next possession to give the hosts the lead once again with 9:16 to play. Ursinus moved to midfield on the ensuing possession but the defense stuffed the Bears on fourth-and-2 to take over on downs with 5:57 to play. The offense moved to the Ursinus 6 but the Bear defense stood strong and forced a 24-yard Parks-Gill field goal to keep it a one-score game with 2:28 remaining. Ursinus started at its own 27 and immediately faced a third-and-9 but Machado hit Aidan Roselle on a swing pass to convert the first down and six plays later the senior quarterback found Zulkowski once again on the right side for a 17-yard touchdown to tie the game with 43 seconds left. Kiedrowski's PAT put the visitors in front for the first time. Two plays into the Bullets' next drive, Jake Ziegler came away with an interception to seal the win.
