Gettysburg announces addition of Magginson to football staff

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Shawn Magginson has been named special teams coordinator and defensive line coach on the Gettysburg football staff, head coach Michael Green announced on Wednesday.

Magginson joins Zach Millard, who was tabbed defensive coordinator on Monday, as Green continues to assemble his new staff for the 2026 season.

Hired on Jan. 13 as the Bullets' 27th head football coach, Green adds a second coordinator to his staff in Magginson, who will also oversee the front end of Millard's defensive unit – a position he knows well.

"We are fortunate to have Coach Magginson join our staff as the Special Teams Coordinator and defensive line coach," Green said. "It was clear through the interview process that Shawn will bring great energy, mentorship and development to our student-athletes. I'm fired up to get him to Gettysburg and build the new era of Bullet Football together."

Magginson has spent the last four seasons as defensive ends coach at Division I Southern Utah after playing and coaching at Frostburg State.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to serve, build relationships, and contribute to something bigger than myself," Magginson said. "I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity to work with Coach Green and Gettysburg, and I'm ready to get to work with great people."

In his first season on the Southern Utah staff in 2022, Magginson helped lead the Thunderbirds to a 5-6 overall record with a 2-3 mark in Western Athletic Conference play. He helped prepare Francis Bemiy for the CFL draft, where he was selected ninth overall by the BC Lions.

A year later, Magginson helped Southern Utah to a 6-5 record and the program's first winning season since 2017. He was part of a defensive staff that put together a unit that ranked in the top 25 in FCS in tackles for loss (sixth, 7.5 TFL/game), rush defense (14th, 106.9 ypg), third-down conversion defense (18th, 32.9 percent), passing efficiency defense (24th, 117.4) and turnovers (25th, 20).

On special teams, he specifically coached the PAT block unit, drawing up the gameplan weekly.

Prior to his time on staff at Southern Utah, Magginson spent four years on the staff of his alma mater, Frostburg State, working with the defensive line. At Frostburg, he worked extensively preparing the weekly scout offense preparation. In his last two seasons a defensive line coach, he was responsible for signaling the defensive calls on the field and managing the rotation of defensive linemen.

A four-year player for the Bobcats, he appeared in all 13 games with two starts as a senior in 2017 and made 46 tackles, including 4.0 for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also had an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery. The defense that season ranked 16th in the nation in total defense and won a then-program record 11 games, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Gettysburg opens the 2026 season at Juniata on Sept. 5.
