THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg used a quick 13-1 run in the third quarter to open up a double-digit lead and held off a fourth-quarter charge from Dickinson to record a 69-60 victory.
THE LEADERS
•
Amanda Rapel (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) led the Bullets with her second career 20-point output, registering 20 points to go with three rebounds and two assists.
•
Kimberly Hopkins (Baldwin, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) added 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.
FOR THE FOES
• Victoria Zerbe led three players in double figures for the Red Devils with 22 points on 9 of 12 shooting. She also had seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• After Dickinson jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first 1:50, baskets from three different Gettysburg players over a 2-minute, 4-second span put the visitors in front 6-5 with 5:49 showing. Two Victoria Zerbe baskets around an
Amanda Rapel three-point play tied the game at 9-all with 4:19 to play. After
Skylar Reale (Warren, N.J./Morristown Beard) gave the Bullets an 11-9 edge, jumpers from Zerbe and Lizzie McGrath gave the Red Devils a 13-11 lead after one quarter.
• A Zerbe three-point play stretched the Dickinson lead to five just 1:25 into the second period before two Rapel buckets keyed a 6-0 run and 17-16 lead with 6:01 on the clock. After an Esther Niebemuo putback turned the one-point deficit into a one-point lead, two Rapel free throws sparked a 6-0 burst in 1 minute, 18 seconds for a 23-18 lead with 3:38 showing. Jelena Subasic hit a long jumper to just beat the shot clock and close the margin to 25-23 but
Olivia Jones (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) hit both free throws off a technical with 19.8 seconds left to stretch the advantage to four at the break.
• Three free throws stretched the lead to seven before a Subasic driving layup made it a 30-25 game with 6:20 showing.
Kimberly Hopkins hit a wing triple to ignite a 13-1 run over a 2-minute, 49-second stretch. The Bullets were 5-for-5 from the floor during the run with nine points from Hopkins to make it a 43-26 game with 3:31 remaining. Dickinson, however, closed the period with an 11-4 stretch to make it a 47-37 score heading to the final quarter.
• A Zerbe layup cut the deficit to eight before Hopkins drained her second 3-pointer of the game for a 50-39 lead a minute into the fourth period. The teams traded baskets until two Clare Cronley free throws and a McGrath corner triple cut the deficit to 55-49 with 4:31 to play. Five points from Rapel around a single Cronley free throw pushed the advantage back to double digits with 3:31 remaining. An Emma Landes 3-pointer and Zerbe old-fashioned three-point play cut the margin to 60-56 but
Ava O'Neil (Chevy Chase, Md./St. John's College) drove to the rim with 2:11 to play and then
Reagan Chrencik (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) powered home a layup to extend the advantage back to eight with 1:21 remaining. Jones went 5-for-6 from the stripe in the final 40.1 seconds to help secure the nine-point win.
THE INSIDE STORY
• With the victory, Gettysburg officially clinches a Centennial Conference playoff berth and hold a two-game lead on the rest of the field – plus holding the tiebreaker – for the No. 2 seed.
