Christopher Newport outscored Gettysburg by 10 in the fourth quarter to stretch two-point game into a 74-62 win in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Div. III women's basketball championship tournament.
THE LEADERS

THE REST OF THE STORY
• After a Madison McKenzie layup opened the scoring 42 seconds into the game,
Reagan Chrencik hit a foul-line jumper and
Amanda Rapel (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) drove to the hoop for a 4-2 lead with 7:34 showing. Three straight Christopher Newport 3-pointers, including back-to-back triples from Sarah Pritz, opened up an 11-4 lead just 1:40 later. The Captains opened up a 17-7 lead before Rapel drained a 3-pointer with 3:18 remaining and the Bullets tallied six of the final nine points in the quarter to cut the margin to 20-13.
• After a McKenzie driving layup to open the quarter,
Sarah Bertolette (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) hit a pair of baskets to key an 8-0 run to close the deficit to one. Two McKenzie free throws with 7:26 showing stretched the lead back to three. Six straight points from Christopher Newport pushed the lead out to 28-21 but Rapel rattled home a pull-up elbow jumper with 4:56 remaining to cut the margin back to five. After a pair of Gettysburg layups, an offensive rebound and kickout to
Ava O'Neil (Chevy Chase, Md./St. John's College) for a 3-pointer gave the Bullets their first lead at 30-28 with 2:35 to play. Chrencik pulled down a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast just before the horn for a 32-29 lead at the break.
• The Captains scored the first seven points of the second half to retake the lead at 36-32 with 6:46 showing. Bertolette banked home a short jumper for Gettysburg's first points of the second half and
Sasha Brody (Lynchburg, Va./Virginia Episcopal School) got a floater to go to retie the game with 5:42 on the clock. After a parade of free throws during a two-minute stretch, McKenzie drove to the basket and stretched the Captains lead to 51-46 but O'Neil cashed in on a second-chance triple to make it a 51-49 game after three quarters.
• Christopher Newport started the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run to extend the advantage to its largest at that point at 62-51 with 6:40 to play. Trailing 66-53,
Adeline Standish hit a pair of layups to close the margin to nine with 2:49 showing but that's as close as it would get down the stretch.
