THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg dropped the opening set to Franciscan, the Bullets won a close second set and then pulled away in both the third and fourth sets for a 3-1 win in the opening match of the Messiah Invitational.
THE LEADERS
•
Halle Feth (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County) led the Bullets with 22 assists and 12 digs.
•
Clare Farrell (Livingston, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) keyed the attack with 12 kills and hit .265.
FOR THE FOES
• Anna Guard led the Barons with 16 kills and 17 digs.
• Logan Hickey also had a double-double with 14 kills and 16 digs.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Franciscan opened up an early four-point lead in the opening set before back-to-back
Eliza Jauregui (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) kills capped a 4-0 run to tie the set at 7-all. The Barons had a 5-0 run of their own before Jauregui was in on a pair of blocks to give Gettysburg a 13-12 edge. Anna Guard knocked down a pair of kills, however, to put Franciscan back in front for good in a 25-18 win.
• The second set featured 16 ties and seven lead changes with neither team leading by more than three. Tied at 21-all,
Emma Bradshaw (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) knocked down a kill and
Gianna Galli (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) followed with two more for a 24-21 lead. Bradshaw then finished off the 25-22 win.
• Tied at 9-all, an
Ellen Manke (Madison, N.J./Morristown Beard School) kill put the Bullets in front and gave
Kierra Fox (Phoenix, Ariz./Rancho Solano Prep School) the serve. She served eight more points top open up an 18-9 lead en route to a 25-14 victory.
• The fourth set was also tied at 9-all before an
Ava Grall (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) kill made it 10-9 and ignite an 11-2 run to take a 20-11 lead. The Barons closed to within 21-16 but Grall bookended a 4-1 finish for the 25-21 win.
THE INSIDE STORY
•
Nala Shearer (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) steadied the defense with 26 digs to go with seven assists.
•
Erin Gonzalez added 10 kills, eight digs and two blocks.
•
Kaitlyn Hedrich (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln Way) contributed 21 assists and nine digs.
