AT GETTYSBURG
“Moe” Banks begins his fifth season as head football coach at Gettysburg in 2025. Banks was named head coach in February 2020, but had to wait until Sept. 4, 2021 to lead the Bullets onto the turf with the 2020 campaign cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
His first season on the sideline saw a pair of defenders earn All-Centennial Conference honors and Banks' initial win in the form of a 48-42 Homecoming win over Juniata on Sept. 25. His squad also played two of its other four home contests to one-score games.
In 2022, two players earned three all-conference nods with Doug Cummings being named the league’s first-team kicker and second-team punter. Chris Lessel was an honorable mention defensive back. Chris Singleton led the nation in blocked kicks, stuffing eight kicks in 10 games. As a team, the Bullets blocked nine, which was fourth in Division III.
A year later, four players claimed all-conference accolades. In 2024, running back Michael Zrelak became the Bullets’ first first-team running back since 2007 after leading an offense that averaged 25.7 to put up the best offensive numbers in Banks’ tenure.
PRIOR TO GETTYSBURG
Banks brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Orange and Blue. He has spent the previous six seasons coaching at Georgetown University (2014-18) and the University of Pennsylvania (2019).
At Georgetown, he coached defensive backs and oversaw special teams. He mentored a secondary that ranked third in the FCS in team passing efficiency defense (97.2 percent) and fourth in interceptions (20) in 2018. The Hoyas also ranked among the league leaders in special teams statistics in his final two seasons. Banks began his collegiate coaching career as the defensive backs coach at Georgetown in 2010 and he coached a total of seven All-Patriot League players on defense and special teams between his two stints with the Hoyas.
At Penn, Banks assisted with the development and implementation of defensive and special teams schemes. He coached a pair of All-Ivy League selections at linebacker and was also the play-caller for the kickoff unit, which finished third in the Ivy League in net kickoff average.
OTHER EXPERIENCES
Banks has a wide and varied background as a player and coach beyond the collegiate atmosphere. Following his first coaching stint at Georgetown, he served as a player/coach with the Corinthian Black Lions in Austria. From 2012-14, he coached in Brazil, serving as defensive coordinator with the Joinville Gladiators, head coach with Rio Atlantico, and assistant head coach/defensive coordinator with the Vasco Da Gama Patriotas. Banks also served as a football ambassador in Brazil to in effort to grow and nurture the development of the sport.
PLAYING DAYS
After graduating from Georgetown with a degree in sociology in 2006, Banks spent time as a defensive back and quarterback with the Marburg Mercenaries in Germany. He also coached the secondary. In 2008, he was player/coach with the Bergamo Lions in Italy and he also spent time in the Arena Football League 2 with the Boise Burn. As an undergraduate, Banks served as team captain and earned a pair of All-Patriot League honors in the secondary.
