GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Kevin Langhauser (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) drilled a walk-off single in the opener as the Gettysburg College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with SUNY Oneonta Monday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.
The Bullets, who concluded their five-game homestand 2-3, won the first game 4-3 but lost the nightcap 5-3.
The two games were originally scheduled to be played on Saturday but were postponed due to inclement weather.
In Game One, the scoreboard read 3-3 after seven innings of play, and that's when Oneonta (7-5) brought in Dave Filak out of the bullpen. Filak (0-1) went on to post a dazzling performance, striking out eight consecutive batters before freshman Chris Simard (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) looped a two-out, hustling double into centerfield, just beating the throw into second. Langhauser followed up with a line shot to right-center, giving the Bullets their third walk-off win of the season and their second in their last five games.
Gettysburg (8-11) received outstanding pitching in the opener, and sophomore starter Michael Sweeney (Bethesda, Md./St. Anselm's Abbey School) did not allow an earned run in seven innings. He finished with a career-high seven strikeouts while scattering seven hits. Classmate Derek Zaleski (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) came on to throw a pair of scoreless innings before freshman Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School) blanked the Red Dragons in the 10th to earn his first collegiate victory.
Oneonta pushed a run across in the second on three hits and one error before the Bullets put up a three-spot in the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch and a two-run single from senior Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck).
A pair of Gettysburg errors put runners on the corners in the Oneonta ninth before Anthony Suhadolnik and Josh Bedosky ripped RBI-singles to pull the Red Dragons even. However, with runners on first and second, Sweeney escaped the jam with a flyout to left.
Zaleski threw a three-up, three-down eighth, but Bedosky drew a one-out walk in the ninth and moved to second on a groundout. But Zaleski induced an inning-ending pop-out before giving way to Karis (1-1), who retired the first two batters in the 10th. Mike Chiapparelli followed up with a single down the leftfield line, but junior Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) made a perfect throw to nail Chiapparelli at second trying to stretch it into a double.
McGee finished 2-for-4 in the opener while Oneonta starter Sam Ackerman limited the Bullets to three runs on five hits while striking out four.
In the second game, the Bullets led 3-1 after four innings but Ryan Myers put the Red Dragons ahead to stay with a three-run homer in the fifth.
Gettysburg went ahead 2-1 after scoring twice on two hits and an error in the third. Sophomore Craig Barrows (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) led off with a double and scored on an error before Langhauser drove in a run with a single. Junior Andrew Burton (McLean, Va./McLean) made it 3-1 when he ripped an RBI-single in the fourth against Red Dragon starter Steve Juedes.
Suhadolnik and Brian Holmes led off the fifth with a walk and a single, respectively, against Gettysburg starter Mike Ciancio (Roseland, N.J./Newark Academy) before Myers connected for his third long ball of the season two batters later, lofting a high fly just over the leftfield fence. Oneonta tacked on an insurance run in the seventh against Bullet reliever Packer Larson (Newark, Del./St. Mark's).
Juedes (2-1) finished with a complete-game four-hitter for the Red Dragons. He did not allow an earned run, walked one, and struck out five. Ciancio (0-3) was charged with the loss after yielding four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. He struck out two and walked three. Sophomore John Antrim-Cashin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Fordham Prep) struck out the only two batters he faced to end the seventh.
Langhauser went 2-for-3 in Game Two while Myers was 4-for-4.
Gettysburg plays its Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday, when it visits Dickinson College at 3:30 p.m.
