Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) put down a dozen kills to lead the Gettysburg College volleyball team to a convincing sweep of visiting Swarthmore College inside Bream Gym on Saturday. The Bullets downed the Garnet 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 and in doing so, jumped into a tie for third in the Centennial Conference standings.

Swarthmore (18-7, 6-2 CC) had never beaten Gettysburg (17-7, 6-2 CC) in volleyball, but with a five-match winning streak and sporting its best record in two decades, the outlook looked promising for the Garnet to finally break the egg. The Bullets, however, had no intention of letting down, earning their sixth-straight victory and improving their record against Swarthmore to 28-0.

Mercier finished 12-for-21 with only one hitting for a team-best attack percentage of .524. Junior middle hitters Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) combined for 15 kills in 35 attempts and six blocks.

Senior Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) led the defensive effort with 18 digs and senior Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) tallied 11 digs and 27 assists.

The Bullets play their final home match of the 2009 regular season against rival Dickinson College on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. Both teams will be participating in Digging for a Cure as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pledges and donations can be made for each dig recorded in the contest, with all proceeds going to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a non-profit organization based in Haverford, Pa.
