ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Muhlenberg College bounced back from a 2-1 deficit to win the final two sets and beat visiting Gettysburg College 3-2 in the Centennial Conference finale for both teams on Friday night. The Bullets closed the regular season 18-8 overall and grab the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament with a 7-3 record.
After dropping the first set 25-22, Gettysburg won each of the next two contests 25-18 and 25-23. Muhlenberg (11-12, 6-4 CC), needing a victory to stay in the hunt for the fifth and final conference playoff spot, rebounded with 20 kills and just three hitting errors in the last two sets, winning 25-14 and 15-8.
Gettysburg turned in its highest kill effort of the season with 61, but the Bullets also committed a season-high 30 errors. Juniors
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and
Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) were Gettysburg's most consistent attackers, totaling a season-high 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Senior
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) posted a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs, while sophomore
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) notched 11 kills.
The backline was busy for Gettysburg, tying a season high with 96 digs. Senior
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) put up 23 and senior
Stephanie Rickabaugh (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) added 18. Senior setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) dished out a season-high 52 assists and totaled 17 digs.
Jennifer Seeba and Brittany Williams posted 14 kills apiece and Christina Cangelosi added 25 digs for Muhlenberg.
No matter the outcome of Saturday's remaining Centennial volleyball matches, Gettysburg will enter the semifinals of the conference tournament as the third seed and will play Franklin & Marshall College next Saturday, Nov. 7, at Haverford College.
