Slow Start Dooms Bullets in CC Championship

Haverford sweeps Gettysburg for fourth-straight title

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team posted a season-low eight points in the opening set of the Centennial Conference Tournament Championship and 25th-ranked Haverford College was quick to take advantage with a three-set sweep en route to its fourth-consecutive conference title on Sunday afternoon.

Haverford (30-3) continued its dominance of Gettysburg (19-9) with its fourth-straight defeat of the Bullets in the postseason, including its second-straight victory in the championship match. The Fords won the opening set 25-8 and held off the visitors to win the final two frames 25-20 and 25-22, respectively.

Gettysburg put itself behind the eight ball early with its lowest scoring set of the season, managing just five kills and five errors in the opening contest. The Bullets were down, but certainly not out as the squad rebounded to hold leads in each of the final two sets. Haverford erased a four-point deficit in the second contest and came back from two points down early in the clinching set.

The Fords' attack recorded a healthy hitting percentage of .364 behind Rebecca Salvo and Kelsey Cantwell. Salvo posted 15 kills against just two errors, while Cantwell notched 13 kills with only three errors. The defense had four players notch double-digit digs with Franny Glick leading the way with 13. Kate Comey paced the offense with 45 assists.

Gettysburg pulled its attack together after a zero hitting percentage in the first set and knocked down 15 kills with only one error in 39 attempts in the final contest. The Bullets finished with a hitting percentage of .196. Senior Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) led the way with nine kills and sophomore Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) added seven.

Senior Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) passed out 24 assists and put up 11 digs, while classmate Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) tallied 13 digs. Krampf wrapped up an outstanding career as a Bullet ranking third all-time in assists (3,860) and fourth in digs (1,646). Kotewicz also cracked the career list in digs and finished sixth with 1,393.
