Andrew Powers recorded his 13th career double-double while going over the 1,000-point mark.

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Junior center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored his 1,000th career point and finished with game- and season-highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Gettysburg College men's basketball team to a 58-43 victory at Haverford College in a Centennial Conference tilt Saturday evening.

Powers, who became the 23rd Bullet to reach the 1,000-point milestone, posted his 13th career double-double as Gettysburg (2-3, 2-0 CC) won its second game in a row after starting 0-3.

Gettysburg climbed out of a nine-point first-half deficit before pulling away midway through the second half. The Bullets sealed the win at the defensive end of the court, shutting out Haverford over the final 2:27. For the game, Gettysburg limited the Fords to 35.3 percent shooting and did not allow a three-pointer.

Haverford (3-3, 1-1 CC) was led by Sam Permutt and Cameron Baker, who scored 12 points apiece.

Freshman forward Alex Zurn (Brookeville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) canned a pair of clutch back-to-back three-pointers late in the game and added season-highs of 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists for the Bullets.

Gettysburg never led in the opening half after Haverford scored the game's first four points. The Fords led 8-2 before Gettysburg pulled even at 10-10 following an 8-2 run. Powers sparked the surge, scoring six of his team's points.

Haverford answered with a 9-0 run, with Permutt pumping in six points, to build its largest lead of the night (19-10) with 7:58 left. But the Bullets had an answer once again, erupting with an 8-0 spurt. Powers scored the first six points during the stretch, and Zurn capped it with a trey. Gettysburg tied it up for the second time (20-20) on a Powers lay-up with 3:24 to go, and senior guard Andrew Bohan (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) made it a 22-22 game at the break when he canned a jumper 10 seconds before the horn.

Entering the game 18 points shy of 1,000, Powers shot 5-for-7 from the field and finished with 12 points in the opening half.

Powers came out of the locker room on fire, scoring the first six points of the half. He gave the Bullets their first lead of the night when he dropped in a lay-up 1:12 into the second stanza, but Haverford tied it twice in the opening four minutes. However, Powers put Gettysburg in front for good with a lay-up at the 15:27 mark, making it 28-26 with his 999th and 1,000th points.

The Bullets began to pull away midway through the stanza, and the visitors took an eight-point lead when Powers went 1-for-2 at the line to make it 41-33 with 8:33 remaining. The Fords narrowed the deficit to five after a Bo Friddell free throw with 5:58 left, but that's when Zurn buried his two big treys, pushing Gettysburg's lead (49-38) into double digits.

Haverford made one final rally when Doug Edelman converted a conventional three-point play with 4:01 to go before Cameron Baker hit a jumper to make it a 49-43 game with 2:28 to go. But the Fords misfired on their final seven field-goal attempts while the Bullets went 7-for-10 at the charity stripe the rest of the way.

Gettysburg, which entered the night shooting a sizzling 80.6 percent at the foul line, shot a season-low 58.3 percent (14-for-24). Haverford made only 11 trips to the line, finishing 7-for-11.

The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday, when they visit No. 10 Franklin & Marshall College at 8 p.m. in a rematch of last season's Centennial Conference championship game.
