Softball Keeps Rolling with Two More Wins

Kristy Rubino fired a one-hitter against Penn State Harrisburg
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg College softball team continued its hot start to 2009 with two more victories as part of the Snowbird Tournament on Tuesday, March 10. Senior Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) allowed just one hit to lead the Bullets past Penn State Harrisburg 5-0 in the first game of the morning, while junior Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) plated the go-ahead run in the ninth inning en route to a 4-3 win over the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.

Gettysburg (7-1) is off to its best start since winning seven of its first eight games to start the 2006 season. The pitching staff has played a major part as Rubino recorded her second shutout of the season, and the fourth overall by the team this spring. She fanned eight batters in the win and walked three.

Sophomore Megan Lott (Bellsville, Md./Pallotti) doubled and drove in a pair of runs against the Nittany Lions, while junior Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) went 2-for-3 at the dish. Senior Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) added a hit and an RBI for the Bullets.

For an encore Tuesday, Gettysburg won its first nine-inning affair since a 3-2 decision over Dickinson College almost five years ago. Both teams scored two runs in the opening seven frames and tacked on runs in each half of their respective at bats in the eighth. After Pitt-Greensburg came up empty in the top of the ninth, the Bullets capitalized on the international tiebreaker rule as Wallick brought Ober in from third on a fielder's choice with one out.

Lott and freshman Catrina DelGais (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) each tallied a pair of base knocks, the latter adding an RBI. Wallick and Ober each pounded out doubles.

Junior Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) improved to 4-0 on the young season after giving up five walks and four hits and striking out two.

Gettysburg picks up action in Myrtle Beach Wednesday, March 11, against St. Joseph's (N.Y.) College and Wilmington (Ohio) College at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
