GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley) cracked a walk-off single in the opener, highlighting a seventh-inning comeback as Gettysburg split a non-conference baseball doubleheader with SUNY Oneonta Saturday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

The Bullets (7-10) used a three-run seventh to win Game One 4-3, but Oneonta (12-3) answered with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap, as Dave Filak tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out 11.

Junior Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) enjoyed a big day at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-4 with a triple and scoring the game-winning run. He also reached 100 career hits with his fifth-inning single.

Senior Chris Liegel (Oak Ridge, N.J./Pope John XXIII) and sophomore Kyle Conklin (Wantage, N.J./High Point) each worked a complete game for the Bullets. Liegel (1-2) scattered 10 hits to pick up the win in the opener before Conklin (1-1) was charged with a tough loss in Game Two, holding the Red Dragons to one earned run on a four-hitter.

In the first game, Gettysburg led 1-0 in the first, when Backus smashed a stand-up triple to center and scored on a double to right by sophomore Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough). But Oneonta came back in the second, when it scored all three of its runs. Dan Randall and Chris Brady led off with back-to-back singles and moved up a bag on a passed ball before Brian Holmes blooped a double between three fielders down the rightfield line, putting the Dragons on the scoreboard. A groundout and an infield single brought two more across the plate as Oneonta went up 3-1.

Liegel escaped further damage in the third, striking out a batter with the bases loaded. He allowed one hit in each of the next three innings but fired a three-up, three-down seventh.

Sophomore Chris Simard (Lexington, Mass./Belmont Hill) sparked the Bullets rally in the seventh, leading off with a single and chasing starter Brett Meservey from the game. Reliever Michael Center got two quick outs on a pop-up and strikeout, and Gettysburg was down to its last strike when sophomore Cam Riera (Medway, Mass./Medway) faced a full count before drawing a walk.

The next three batters each ripped an RBI-single. Backus scored Simard with liner to center before Karis tied it up, bringing home Riera from second with a grounder through the right side. Vladyka followed up with a single to left, scoring Backus easily from second.

It was the second straight last-inning rally at Kircchoff Field, as No. 29 Ithaca put up five runs in the top of the ninth on Friday in a 6-4 victory.

Karis and freshman Drew Roy (Needham, Mass./Needham) each finished 2-for-4 in the opener for the Bullets. Carmine Caputo, Randall, and Brady all collected two hits for Oneonta.

Liegel finished with five strikeouts and no walks. Of his 105 pitches, 73 were strikes. Meservey came away with a no-decision after an eight-hit, seven-strikeout, no-walk performance over six innings. Center (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

In Game Two, the Bullets appeared to have something going in the bottom of the first, when they loaded the bases with none out. Roy walked before Riera was hit with a pitch, and Backus also drew a base on balls. Then on a comebacker to the mound, Filak went home for the force out, which would have left the bases loaded with one down. However, the home plate umpire ruled interference on Roy, whose seemingly clean feet-first slide knocked over the catcher, who was standing on top of the plate. The interference resulted in Riera being called out at third, and Filak got out of the mess with a strikeout.

Oneonta received all the offense it would need in the second, when Brady led off with a triple to center and scored on a Center groundout to second. Conklin would allow only two hits the rest of the way, and the Dragons added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Cody Hitt reached on an error leading off and scored on a Ryan Myers double. Myers moved to third on a flyout and scored on a Brady sacrifice fly.

Filak (2-0) was in command the rest of the way, yielding only three infield singles while allowing the ball into the outfield just once. It was the second impressive performance at Gettysburg for Filak, who also struck out his first eight batters in a relief appearance last season before losing on a pair of hits in the bottom of the 10th.

Conklin finished with three strikeouts and one walk while Riera went 2-for-2 in the nightcap. Myers was 2-for-3 for Oneonta.

The Bullets play their Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday, when they visit No. 7 Johns Hopkins at 3:30 p.m.
