ALLENTOWN, Pa. – After being held to just three hits in a 3-2 opening loss at Muhlenberg College, the Gettysburg College bats came alive in the nightcap, pounding out a season-high 15 hits en route to an 8-1 victory, salvaging a split in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams at Cedarcreek Field Saturday, March 21. Junior
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) helped the Bullets earn the victory with her eighth win on the mound and added three hits and an RBI at the plate.
Gettysburg (15-3, 1-1 C) picked up the day's first run in the second inning of the opener when junior
Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) led off with a double and later scored on a single by sophomore
Megan MacNabb (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). After Muhlenberg (6-8, 1-1 CC) evened the score in the bottom half of the inning, the Bullets threatened to put more runs up with runners on the corners and one out. Mule pitcher Ashley Brewer quelled the threat by fielding a pair of grounders to close the inning.
The Mules jumped ahead 3-1 with RBI doubles in the fifth and sixth innings, but Gettysburg aimed for a comeback in the seventh, bringing one run in as the result of two errors and putting a pair of runners on the base paths with just one out. Brewer once again came up clutch for the hosts, striking out the final two batters of the game to pick up the victory.
Senior
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) fell to 6-3 on the year for the Bullets after giving up eight hits, three runs (two earned), one walk, and striking out three.
Game two was a different story altogether as the visitors jumped in front with three runs in the opening inning and never looked back. Woodbury, McCullough, and MacNabb all notched RBI singles in the opening at bat to stake the Bullets to a 3-0 lead.
Gettysburg added single runs in the second and fifth inning before going for three more in the sixth as senior
Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) connected on a two-run double with the bases loaded and freshman
Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) added an RBI single.
McCullough maintained her perfect mark at 8-0 by holding the Mules to just five hits and one run, while striking out seven. She was 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Senior
Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) posted three hits and scored twice, while sophomore
Megan Lott (Bellsville, Md./Pallotti) and Wallick each added two hits. Rahs reached base all four times she went to the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.
Gettysburg returns home for its next scheduled event, a non-conference doubleheader against Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday, March 25, at 3 p.m.
