GRANTHAM, Pa. – Messiah College had lost just two games heading into Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader with Gettysburg College, but the Bullets put another tally in the loss column for the Falcons, bouncing back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 5-2 victory in the opening game. Messiah came back in the nightcap with a 5-1 decision, dropping Gettysburg to 16-6 overall on the year.
Coming off a sweep of Albright College in which in scored 23 runs, Messiah (19-3) brought in a pair of runs in their second at bat, including an RBI double by pitcher Jessica Rhoads. The advantage only held until Gettysburg's next at bat as sophomore
Megan Lott (Bellsville, Md./Pallotti) plated a pair of runs with a two-out double to right field.
Senior
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) held the hot-hitting Falcons to just three hits over the last four innings and stranded all five runners that reached base. Her teammates gave her a lead to work with in the fifth as senior
Nicole Yannotta (Whippany Park, N.J./Whippany Park) doubled to center to bring in two more runs. The Bullets added an insurance run in the seventh on a Falcon error.
Rubino ended a three-game slide and improved to 7-4 on the season after allowing two runs, six hits, and three walks, while striking out six. Her Falcon counterpart, Rhoads, suffered her first collegiate loss despite posting 10 strikeouts.
Freshman
Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) posted a pair of hits and a pair of runs for the Bullets, while Yannotta walked twice and scored once.
Gettysburg was effectively shut down in game two as Megan Rice set down each of the first nine batters she faced. Messiah gave its pitcher a lead in the second frame after loading the bases and scoring one run on a bases-loaded walk and adding two more on an error.
The Bullets got one run back in the top of the fourth as Yannotta scored on a ground out by junior
Sarah Woodbury (Audobon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy). Gettysburg was unable to produce more offense the rest of the way despite putting runners in scoring position in each of the final three frames.
Rice picked up the win for the Falcons after holding the Bullets to just five hits and striking out four. Junior
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) dropped to 8-2 with the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits and four walks.
Gettysburg resumes its conference schedule this weekend with a doubleheader against Swarthmore College on Saturday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at Bobby Jones Field.
