COCOA, Fla. – The Gettysburg College baseball team opened its Spring Break trip to Florida on Sunday and was swept by SUNY Old Westbury, falling 11-2 and 8-5.
In the opener, the Bullets (0-4) were unable to solve starter Robert Whitenack (2-0), who struck out 10 while tossing a two-hit complete game. Gettysburg got on the scoreboard first, when sophomore
Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School) ripped a two-out, two-run triple.
Senior starter
Will Kleva (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) started strong, throwing three shutout innings to open the game, before the Panthers broke out with five runs on six hits in the fourth. Westbury put the game out of reach with a five-run, five-hit sixth.
Kleva (0-2) tied a career-high with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings and did not walk a batter. Junior
Matt Zwaan (Berwyn, Pa./Malvern Prep) came on to throw 1/3 of an inning before classmate
John Antrim-Cashin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Fordham Prep) worked the final frame, striking out two of the four batters he faced.
The Panthers (3-2) used another big inning to take an early lead in the nightcap, getting four runs on five hits and one error in the first. Westbury added another run in the second to go up 5-0, but the Bullets got into it with a three-run fifth. Sophomore
Cam Riera (Medway, Mass./Medway) led off with a double and score two batters later on a two-bagger from classmate
Cory Jackmuff (Woodbury, N.J./West Deptford). David Collado then uncorked back-to-back wild pitches as Gettysburg pulled to within 5-3.
The Bullets tied it up when senior
Sam Stabert (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) smacked a two-run single in the sixth. But after being shut out from the third through the fifth, the Panthers got to Gettysburg starter
Derek Zaleski (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times on three hits and an error. Reliever Jorge Hiraldo (1-0) got the final three outs in the seventh to conclude the sweep for Westbury.
Zaleski (0-1), who was making his first appearance of the season, struck out two and walked one in 5 1/3 innings of work. Junior Michael Sweeney (Bethesda, Md./St. Anselm's School) threw 2/3 of inning in relief.
Riera went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.
Gettysburg continues its 10-game, seven-day trip with a doubleheader against Bridgewater State on Monday at 10 a.m.
