CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior
Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Gettysburg College softball team to a 9-5 victory at Washington (Md.) College on Good Friday, but the Bullets shot at a sweep was spoiled in the nightcap as darkness halted the contest after seven innings with the score deadlocked 4-4.
Gettysburg (19-8-1, 4-3-1 CC) tallied the day's opening run and following an equalizing run by Washington (8-16-1, 0-9-1 CC) in the second, the Bullets tacked on three more runs in the third on a bases-loaded double by senior
Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg).
The Bullets continued to pour in runs in their next at bat as Ober belted a two-out, two run double. She plated two more runs in her next at bat in the sixth, smacking her team-best fourth home run of the spring and the 10th of her career over the fence in center field, giving Gettysburg a 9-2 lead.
After allowing two runs on solo home runs by Gabby Devaud in the opening six innings, senior
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) was touched for three runs in the seventh on three hits and a pair of Bullets errors. She slammed the door shut on the rally, however, fanning the final batter with two runners aboard.
All of Gettysburg's runs were scored with two outs. Ober was perfect on the afternoon in reaching base, adding a walk to her three hits. She also scored three times. Sophomore
Megan Lott (Bellsville, Pa./Pallotti) posted a pair of hits, while sophomore
Caitlin Bay (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) scored twice.
Rubino improved to 9-5 overall after allowing seven hits, five runs (four earned), and one walk, while striking out five.
After striking early in the opener, Gettysburg found itself down 1-0 after four innings of play in the nightcap. Senior
Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park) brought in the visitor's first run in the fifth with her 13th double of the season, one shy of the school record. The two-bagger was also the 34th of her career, putting her two shy of the Bullets' all-time mark.
Gettysburg added to the lead in the next inning with a pair of runs, including an RBI single by junior
Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon). Washington countered with two runs in their half of the frame to keep the score tied.
The visitors tallied a run in the top of the seventh, but the Shorewomen gave the Bullets a taste of their own medicine by scoring the equalizer with two outs on the board. Any chance of a victory for either team was halted prior to the start of the eighth as the game was called due to darkness.
Yannotta tallied two hits, a run, an RBI, and a walk, while junior
Sarah Woodbury (Audobon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) drove in a pair of runs. Junior
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) started the game and allowed three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Rubino threw the final two innings, giving up a pair of hits and one run. She struck out two batters to become the first player in school history with four 100-strikeout seasons.
Gettysburg returns to action with a conference doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall College at Bobby Jones Field on Tuesday, April 14. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
