GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College's four seniors made the most of their final appearance at Bobby Jones Field by helping the host Bullets sweep McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney),
Nicole Yannotta (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), and
Jessica Wallick (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) combined for nine hits and six runs in the two games, while
Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) gave up only two unearned runs to pick up her 12th victory of the season in the opener.
Gettysburg (26-9-1, 11-4-1 CC) took the opener 5-2 and held off a late McDaniel (13-20, 3-11 CC) rally to win the nightcap 4-3. Ober went 4-for-6 with three runs and five RBI in the two games, while Yannotta posted three hits and scored three times.
The Bullets jumped on the board in their opening at bat as Yannotta singled and came around to score on a single up the middle by Ober. Ober was the next runner to find home, jetting for second on a pitch and cruising all the way to third when the toss went wild. The throw to third by the catcher was wide, allowing the Gettysburg senior to scamper home.
McDaniel got a run back in the first half of the second, but Gettysburg's senior connection struck again in the third as Yannotta led off the at bat with a single and came around to score on a single by Ober, staking the hosts to a 3-1 lead.
Once again, the Green Terror sliced the deficit to one with an unearned run in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, sophomore
Caitlin Bay (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) provided some insurance with a two-out, two run triple down the right-field line. Jordan Beans doubled to right-center in the top of the seventh for the visitors, and made her way to third, but a rebounded hit off Rubino by Lauren Wildasin was scooped up by Yannotta at short and gunned to first for the final out of the game.
Rubino allowed only five hits and one walk while striking out five to improve to 12-6 overall. Christina Morley took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks.
Yannotta finished 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk, while Ober was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
After a quiet two and a half innings, the hosts struck first in the nightcap as Bay reached on an error and came around to score on a double by Ober. Junior
Sarah Woodbury (Audobon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) brought Ober in with a double to the warning track in left to put the Bullets up 2-0.
With junior
Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) twirling a gem on the mound, surrendering only one hit in the opening six innings, Gettysburg added some insurance runs in the fifth inning as Ober closed her career at Bobby Jones by crushing a ball over the fence in left for a pair of runs. That proved to be the difference in the contest, as the Green Terror came back for three runs in the seventh.
Ober wrapped up a productive afternoon with a 2-for-3 performance in game two, scoring two runs and driving in three. Yannotta added a hit and run and Wallick posted a pair of hits.
McCullough upped her record to 13-3 on the year with the victory. She allowed three runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out 10.
With a spot in next weekend's Centennial Conference Tournament waiting, the Bullets may have to play out a tied game against Washington (Md.) College to determine seeding for the tournament. The time and date of that contest, if needed, will be announced early next week.
