Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Kevin Langhauser (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) tied the single-season school record for triples, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a pair of three-baggers, as the hot-hitting Bullets broke open a close game late to defeat Catholic University 10-5 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at a sun-drenched Kirchhoff Field.
Gettysburg (16-21) led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth before erupting for five runs on five hits.
The Bullets, coming off a 15-hit performance in a 13-11 win at Lebanon Valley on Monday, out-hit the Cardinals 13-12. Freshman
Drew Roy (Needham, Mass./Needham) went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored while junior
Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) finished 2-for-3 with three runs. Senior
Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) and sophomore
Cam Riera (Medway, Mass./Medway) banged out a pair of hits each while sophomore
Chris Simard (Lexington, Mass./Belmont Hill) drove in two runs.
Langhauser legged out his eighth and ninth triples of the season, tying the mark set by Jim Nastasi in 2001.
Junior
Derek Zaleski (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) earned the win on the mound for the Bullets, throwing 7 2/3 innings and yielding four runs (two earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out four. Classmate Michael Sweeney (Bethesda, Md./St. Anselm's Abbey School) came on to work out of a tight jam in the eighth and earned his third save of the season – one shy of the school record – and his second in as many days. Sweeney also faced his brother, Kevin, for the first time in his collegiate career and induced a flyout to left in the ninth inning.
Patrick Quintana and Mike Goodman led Catholic (19-19) with a pair of 3-for-5 performances. The Cardinals, who were prepping for the Landmark Conference championship tournament this weekend, used six different pitchers, with none working more than 2 2/3.
The Bullets went in front in the second against starter Danny Freeman, who was making his first start of the season, when Riera ripped a two-out, RBI single up the middle. The Cardinals took their only lead when they plated a pair of unearned runs in the third to take a 2-1 advantage.
Gettysburg went ahead 4-2 with a three-run, four-hit third. Langhauser and Roy drove in runs with a triple and double, respectively, before Simard capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.
The Bullets extended their lead to 5-2 in the fourth without a base hit. Gettysburg loaded the bases when Backus, sophomore
Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School), and Langhauser drew three straight walks with one out, but Michael Bzozowski came on to get a fielder's choice that scored Backus and a groundout to end the inning. He went on retire his next six batters before he was lifted after the sixth.
The Cardinals pulled to within a run in the eighth. Sean Earley led off with a walk before Daniel Sullivan was issued a free pass with two outs. Sweeney was then called on to face leadoff hitter Joseph Devine, who raked an RBI-double to left-center, cutting the deficit to 5-4 with runners on second and third. But Sweeney put out the threat with a pop-out.
Riera sparked the Bullets big eighth, as he hustled out an infield single to second to start the inning. After he was bunted to second by junior
Craig Barrows (Whippany, N.J./Whippany Park), Backus and Karis worked back-to-back walks once again, setting the stage for Langhauser. He drilled reliever Kevin Sweeney's first pitch deep into the left-center gap, clearing the bases and making it 8-4. He scored on a single by Roy, who would cross the plate as well following back-to-back singles from Vladyak and Simard.
Catholic pushed across an unearned run in the ninth to set the final score.
Gettysburg concludes its 2009 season on Wednesday, when it hosts Juniata College in another non-conference tilt.
