GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team had its longest winning streak in 18 years halted in its second match of the Blast Tournament as visiting University of Mary Washington handed the Bullets a 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20) setback Friday night in Bream Gym. Gettysburg (8-1) had won its earlier match against Elizabethtown College 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 28-26) in a battle of unbeatens.
The Bullets got off on the right foot with a sweep of Elizabethtown (5-1) to start the day. After taking the opening set, Gettysburg trailed 24-20 in the second until a string of hitting errors by the Blue Jays led to five-straight points for the hosts and
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) polished off the comeback with a kill. Set three was tightly-contested, but the Bullets held the lead from nearly wire-to-wire.

Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) paced the attack with a dozen kills and Mercier and sophomore
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) each added nine. Senior setter
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) dished out 37 assists and senior libero
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) led the defense with 18 digs.
After suffering a 3-1 setback at the hands of Frostburg State University to open the tournament, Mary Washington (4-3) went after the unbeaten Bullets. Trailing 13-11, the Eagles ran off six points to grab the upper-hand en route to a first-set victory. With a close win in set two in their back pocket, Mary Washington appeared poised to sweep the hosts with a 17-8 advantage in the third frame. Gettysburg came storming back with nine of the next 10 points to tie the match, five coming on emphatic kills. The Bullets won the set as sophomore
Katie McConville (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) over-powered a block for the winning kill.
The momentum didn't hold in the fourth set as Mary Washington jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead and led by as many as eight down the stretch.
Gettysburg was plagued by errors against the Eagles, committing 21 attack errors, nine service errors, and a dozen reception errors.
McConville led the way for the Bullets with a career-high 12 kills in 27 attempts. Mercier, Yoder, Hogan, and junior
Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) each turned in seven kills. Kotewicz led the defensive effort with 21 digs and Mercier posted 17 to go with a pair of block assists. Krampf also hit double digits with 14 digs and handed out 34 assists.
Day two of the Blast Tournament kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, in Bream Gym as Elizabethtown meets Mary Washington. The Bullets take the court at 12 and 2 p.m. against Bridgewater College (1-6) and Frostburg State (7-1), respectively.
