Box Score
GRANTHAM, Pa. – Gettysburg College held Messiah College off the scoreboard for the entire first half for just the second time this season, but the top-ranked Falcons refused to be denied in the second half, weathering an hour-long lightning delay to earn a 3-0 non-conference victory in women's soccer action Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (4-2-0) came into Wednesday's night affair with confidence thanks to a scoreless tie with Messiah (7-0-1) last season and a four-match shutout streak this fall. The Bullets extended their season scoreless streak to over 410 minutes, its longest since 2003, by blanking the Falcons through the first 54 minutes of play and allowing only six shots.
With zeroes on the scoreboard and thunderstorms looming on the horizon, Messiah turned to its top two goal scorers to end Gettysburg's streak. Erin Hench netted her sixth score of the fall at 54:13, taking a feed from Amanda Naeher and blasting it from 18 yards. Naeher took her turn just 12 minutes later, drilling her sixth goal from 12 yards up to stake the hosts to a 2-0 lead.
Play was halted due to lightning with about 16 minutes remaining in the contest. The two teams went inside to avoid the storms and resumed play about an hour and 15 minutes later.
Messiah wasted no time in picking up the action, netting its third goal four minutes after played resumed. Marla Sensi dished the ball up to Corinne Wulf who knocked in a low shot for her third goal of the season at 78:26.
Gettysburg's lone shot on goal came late in the 87th by
Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard), but the attempt was thwarted by Falcon keeper Autumn Reilly.
Messiah out-shot Gettysburg 20-2 in the contest, including 14-1 in the second half. The Falcons also posted three corner kicks, while holding the Bullets to none.
Sophomore goalie
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) put up a stiff fight in her first meeting with Messiah, totaling a career-high nine saves.
Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule at home this Saturday, Sept. 26, against Haverford College at 4 p.m.
