GETTYSBURG, Pa. – In a rematch of the last season's Centennial Conference Tournament championship match, Gettysburg College was unable to upend No. 21 Haverford College, falling in three sets 25-12, 25-16, 25-17 on Saturday inside Bream Gym. The Bullets didn't end the day empty-handed, however, closing with a convincing non-conference victory over the University of Scranton.
Haverford (15-2, 2-0 CC) and Gettysburg (11-6, 1-1 CC) split its two meetings last season with the Fords ultimately coming out on top in the Centennial title match in four sets. In the opening set of Saturday's affair, Gettysburg rebounded from an 8-3 deficit to tie the score at 11, but the Fords countered with a 14-1 run capped with a Rebecca Salvo kill.
The hosts earned their second lead of the match, and first since the contest's opening point, at the start of set two and jumped ahead 6-3. Three of Gettysburg's 11 hitting errors in the frame came in sequence, however, letting let Haverford tie the score. Following a brief tie at 7-7, the Fords again went on a big run, netting 12 of the next 16 points. The visitors continued the momentum into the final frame with a 6-0 start en route to the deciding win.
Gettysburg registered a negative attack percentage (-.020) for the first time this season, committing 21 errors with just 19 kills in 98 attempts. The Bullets were also tormented by Haverford's serves and committed 11 service reception errors.
Juniors
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and
Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) each tallied four kills and senior
Amanda Krampf (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) posted 11 assists and 17 digs.
Kelsey Cantwell led Haverford with 12 kills, 11 digs, and five aces. Rebecca Salvo added 11 kills and 15 digs, while Kate Comey dished out 28 assists and three aces.
Also falling to the Fords in three sets, Scranton did not find the going any easier against a recharged Gettysburg squad. The Bullets easily won the opening sets 25-7 and 25-16, allowing the up-and-coming players to cap the day with a 25-22 decision in the final set.
Yoder led Gettysburg with a dozen kills on 20 attempts, adding one block solo and two block assists. Sophomore
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) posted nine kills and Burns and senior
Kristina Mercier (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) each added seven kills.
Krampf turned in an all-around performance with 26 assists, five service aces, and a team-high 15 digs. Senior libero
Kristin Kotewicz (Columbia, Md./River Hill) and Mercier each tallied 10 digs.
Gettysburg returns to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a home date against Franklin & Marshall College at 7 p.m.
