Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior forward
Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) scored a game-high 19 points while making 8-of-9 shots and Gettysburg held McDaniel College to 29.8 percent shooting en route to a 62-37 Centennial Conference victory Wednesday evening at Bream Gymnasium.
The Bullets (9-6, 7-2 CC), who held the Green Terror scoreless for a 8:29 stretch late in the game, recorded their best defensive performance in nearly 46 years. McDaniel's 37 points marked the fewest Gettysburg allowed since a 48-36 win over Albright College on Feb. 4, 1964. It was also the first time the Bullets held an opponent to under 40 points since their 45-39 win over Moravian College on Feb. 3, 1982.
With the win, the Bullets are now tied with Franklin & Marshall for first place in the Centennial Conference. F&M defeated Dickinson on Wednesday while Muhlenberg, which entered the night tied with Gettysburg and F&M for first, lost to Ursinus.
Junior center
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) contributed 14 points and seven rebounds for Gettysburg while senior guard
Brendan Hager (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) dished out seven assists. All 17 Bullets who dressed entered the game, and 11 found their way into the scoring column.
Woody Butler led McDaniel (7-8, 3-5 CC) with seven points off the bench while Marcus Dyson had a game-high eight rebounds.
Gettysburg wore its all-orange road uniforms as part of the Orange & Blue Club's “Orange Crush” event, which encouraged all fans to wear orange.
Both teams struggled offensively early on, and the scoreboard read 7-7 with less than 11 minutes left in the opening half. But a jumper from sophomore guard
Matt Wunderlich (West Chester, Pa./Haverford School) put the Bullets in front to stay, and it jump-started a 17-5 Gettysburg run. Wunderlich's bucket marked the first points of his college career.
Kennedy capped the spurt with a jumper that made it 24-12 with 5:21 to go before the Green Terror narrowed the gap to 26-18 with 2:52 left. But a Powers lay-up nine seconds later gave the Bullets a double-digit lead they would not surrender the rest of the way, and Gettysburg carried a 31-20 lead into the break.
Powers notched 10 points in the opening half to lead all scorers while Kennedy had nine points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Kennedy drained his first four shots of the second half, including a pair of 3-pointers, before finally missing with 9:35 left on his final shot of the night. He finished the game 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. In the meantime, the Bullets were holding McDaniel to 28.6 percent shooting in the second period. It was a 46-31 game with 12:01 left before the Bullets applied the clamps defensively, shutting out McDaniel until Butler made the first of two free throws with 3:47 to go. Although Gettysburg only scored 10 points during the stretch, it was enough to open up a 25-point lead and put the game away.
The Bullets held McDaniel to 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from 3-point range, and the Green Terror were just 6-for-12 from the foul line as McDaniel had its lowest scoring output in seven years.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, when it visits Swarthmore College at 4 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
