GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Five different Bullets reached double figures in scoring and Gettysburg used a balanced scoring effort to beat Swarthmore College 80-63 in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening in Bream Gymnasium.

Gettysburg (5-5, 3-1 CC) received 16 points and six rebounds from freshman forward Alex Zurn (Brookeville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal), who shot 7-for-9 from the field, while senior guard Brendan Hager (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) netted a career-high 16 points to go with four assists. Junior center Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) added 12 points, and with his seventh and final rebound of the night, reached 500 for his career, making him just the 11th player in school history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and the first since David Glaser '05 in 2004-05. Freshman center Christian Bors (Lanham, Md./Sidwell Friends [D.C.]) contributed a season-high 12 points in just nine minutes off the bench.

Swarthmore (2-9, 1-3 CC) was paced by freshman forward Will Gates, who scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior forward Ryan Carmichael added 15 points off the bench.

It was a tight game early on, with five ties and three lead changes over the opening eight minutes. But the Bullets used a 6-0 spurt to open up their first double-digit lead (22-12) with 9:42 to go in the opening stanza. The Garnet pulled to within seven on two occasions, the last coming on a pair of Gates free throws with 8:28 on the clock, but Gettysburg used another 6-0 surge to go up 31-17 following a three-pointer from junior guard Paul Crone (Braddock Heights, Md./Middletown).

Zurn electrified the crowd with an outstanding series of plays late in the half, leaping to make a spectacular block on the defensive end before soaring for an alley-oop dunk on a lob from Hager with 4:09 to go. His slam was part of a 12-point first half as the Bullets, who led by as much as 14 in the opening period, led 40-29 at halftime.

The Garnet trailed just 44-36 after a Matt Allen three-pointer with 17:20 left, but Gettysburg broke it open with a 10-0 run over the next 3:10. The Bullets led by as much as 19 (58-39) with 12:33 left after a Zurn jumper with 12:33 remaining, and Swarthmore could only get as close as 11 the rest of the way.

The Bullets outscored Swarthmore 26-17 at the free-throw line and enjoyed their highest output at the charity stripe since making 32 in a 77-70 overtime win over Dickinson on Feb. 18, 2006. Bors shot 8-for-11 at the foul line while Powers went 7-for-12 and Hager was 6-for-6. Gettysburg shot 56.1 percent from the field – its third-best shooting performance of the season – and was 8-for-16 from beyond the arc.

Swarthmore was held to 33.9 percent shooting, including 25 percent (6-for-24) from three-point territory. The Garnet went 85.0 percent (17-for-20) at the foul line.
