CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Junior center
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds and the hot-shooting Gettysburg College men's basketball team claimed an 82-54 Centennial Conference victory at Washington (Md.) College Saturday afternoon.
The Bullets (6-5, 4-1 CC) shot 62.2 percent from the floor, 60.0 percent (6-for-10) from three-point range, and 90.9 percent (20-for-22) at the foul line. The team remains tied for second in the Centennial Conference standings after posting back-to-back 80-point games for the first time since their first two outings of the 2007-08 season.
It was the 14th career double-double and the second of the season for Powers, who shot 10-for-11 from the foul line. It was also his second career 30-point game, and he finished two points shy of his career-high set against Salem State in the first round of the 2007-08 NCAA Division III Tournament.
Gettysburg held the Shoremen (4-5, 2-3 CC) to 31.3 percent shooting, including a 27.5 percent mark in the second half, when the Bullets outscored Washington 44-27.
Sophomore guard
Brendan Trelease (Union, N.J./Roselle Catholic), making his second career start, drained all four of his three-point attempts and scored a career-high 14 points while grabbing five rebounds. Junior forward
Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) scored 11 points, pulled down five boards, and tied a career-high with five assists, while senior guard
Brendan Hager (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) distributed six assists.
Andrew Chambers led Washington with 15 points and seven rebounds while Doug Holcombe posted 10 points and five rebounds.
Leading by 38-27 at the half, the Bullets scored the first five points of the second period, then broke open the game with a 9-2 run. Trelease opened the spurt with a trey, and back-to-back Powers lay-ups made it 61-37 with 11:26 left. The Shoremen were unable to get closer than 23 the rest of the way, and Gettysburg's lead hit 30 (82-52) on a three-pointer from senior guard
Andrew Bohan (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) with 41 seconds left.
After three lead changes in the opening two minutes, the Bullets would not trail for the remainder of the game following an 8-0 run. Powers kicked off the spurt with a jumper, and freshman forward
Alex Zurn (Brookeville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) capped it with a steal and lay-up with 15:12 showing to make it 12-7.
The Bullets led 16-9 after a Powers jumper before the Shoremen got back into it with a 7-0 run to pull even with 9:58 left. However, Gettysburg answered with an 8-0 surge to go up 24-16. Bohan got things rolling with a pair of foul shots, and after consecutive baskets by freshman center
Christian Bors (Lanham, Md./Sidwell Friends [D.C.]), Powers nailed a pair of free throws with 8:10 to go.
Gettysburg enjoyed its largest lead of the half when Trelease and Kennedy drained back-to-back threes to make it 36-23 with 1:34 left. It was 38-25 after a pair of Hager free throws before two Holcombe foul shots made it 38-27 at the half.
The Bullets shot 65.2 percent (15-for-23) in the opening half while holding Washington to 37.0 percent shooting. Gettysburg committed 14 turnovers in the first half while the Shoremen turned it over 12 times.
For the game, Washington took 22 more shots (67-45) than the Bullets. Although Gettysburg held a 39-30 rebounding advantage, the Shoremen collected 11 more offensive boards (16-5) than the Bullets. The visitors also finished with 24 turnovers against Washington's 15.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Tuesday, when it visits Ursinus College in another Centennial Conference match-up starting at 7:30 p.m.
