Box Score
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior
Teddy Smith (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and junior
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) each tallied a goal and an assist as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team downed host Washington College 4-1 Friday night.
After posting nine goals in its first 11 contests, Gettysburg (4-7-1, 3-2-1 CC) lit the lamp four times in the second half to get by Washington (3-9-1, 0-5-1 CC). Smith started the scoring just over four minutes into the final period, fielding a pass from freshman
Tyler Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) in front of the Shoremen keeper.
Washington answered Smith's call less than seven minutes later as Just Geho scored his third goal of the fall off a free kick at 56:02. It only took the Bullets a four minutes to break the deadlock with Hynes scoring for the second consecutive match off a free kick by Smith.
A pair of first-time goal scorers added insurance for the Bullets, beginning with
Calum Benjamin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day School) scoring in transition via a pass by Hynes at 68:40. Freshman
Andrew McGuire (Mahwah, N.J./Bergen Catholic) took his turn in the 80th minute with a transition goal courtesy of junior
Teddy McCarthy (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis Chaffee School (Conn.)).
Despite combining for 13 shots in the opening half, neither squad could find the back of the net as Washington goalie Chris Phipps stopped four shots and Gettysburg keeper
Connor Darrell (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) posted a pair of saves. Phipps capped the night with nine saves and Darrell taliled a career-best six stops.
Gettysburg led in both shots (19-15) and corner kicks (3-2) in the contest. Both Smith and Shaffer led the Bullets with four shots.
Next up for Gettysburg is a non-conference contest at York College on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m.
