Bullets Handle Bears on Volleyball Court

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College picked off Ursinus College 3-0 in a Centennial Conference volleyball match inside Bream Gym on Saturday before dropping a five-set decision to St. Mary's (Md.) College later in the afternoon.

Gettysburg (10-11, 2-2 CC) had no trouble sweeping Ursinus (8-10, 1-2 CC) with scores of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-13. The Bullets jumped out to early leads in each of the opening two sets, but the Bears forced an eight-all tie at the beginning of the final frame. The hosts went on a 17-5 run to close the victory.

A well-rounded offensive effort by Gettysburg was paced by junior Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) with eight kills. Freshman Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) posted seven kills, four aces, and five total blocks, while senior Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) logged five kills and 10 total blocks. Freshman Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) recorded a double-double with 25 assists and a dozen digs, tying junior Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) for team honors in the latter stat.

The Bullets were upended in Saturday's finale by a streaking squad from St. Mary's (13-5). Gettysburg battled back from a 2-1 hole to win the fourth set 25-22, but the Seahawks closed the five-set win with a 15-13 victory in the decisive fifth frame, giving the team its ninth win in its last 10 matches.

Hogan capped an outstanding day on the attack with a career-high 21 kills, and she was one off her personal mark with 17 digs. Burns recorded 10 total blocks for the third time in her last four matches and eclipsed 400 total blocks for her career. She posted two solos and eight assists, while posting nine kills. Senior Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) tallied seven kills and six blocks.

Kuhn notched her second double-double of the day with 37 assists and 13 digs, while Rubenstein put up 20 or more digs for the seventh time this season, logging a team-high 21.

Gettysburg returns to the court on Wednesday, Oct. 6, for a conference affair inside Bream Gym against Johns Hopkins University at 7 p.m.
