SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College solidified its position as a serious contender in the Centennial Conference by defeating Gettysburg College for the first time in program history on the volleyball court Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (14-13, 5-3 CC) came into Saturday's affair having won each of the 28 meetings with Swarthmore (17-8, 7-1 CC) since 1984. The Garnet shattered that trend with a clean sweep of the visitors, taking home the victory 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 and clinching a berth in the conference playoffs for the second consecutive season.
Senior
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) notched 11 kills and only one error in 19 attempts (.526 hitting percentage), but the rest of the team managed only 18 kills with 13 errors in 85 attempts (.059 hitting percentage). Junior
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) posted seven kills and 10 digs, while
Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) logged four kills and five total blocks. Freshman setter
Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) dished out 26 assists.
Defensively, junior
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) and sophomore
Katie Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Covenant Life) combined for 17 digs.
Kathryn Montemurro paced Swarthmore with 15 kills, while setter Allison Coleman posted 41 assists, five aces, and 10 digs.
Gettysburg begins the final week of the regular season at Dickinson College on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.
