Volleyball Finishes Hopkins in Five

Junior Virginia Hogan knocks down 17 kills

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) blasted 17 kills and put up 16 digs to lead Gettysburg to a 3-2 victory over Johns Hopkins University in a Centennial Conference volleyball showdown in Bream Gym.

Gettysburg (11-11, 3-2 CC) and Johns Hopkins (10-11, 3-2 CC) traded wins and losses with the hosts taking sets one and three 25-23 and 25-19, respectively, and the visitors winning sets two and four 25-20 and 25-15, respectively. The Bullets wrapped up the victory by winning the decisive fifth set 15-10 thanks to freshman Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) who posted a kill, an ace, and eight assists in the frame.

A match removed from knocking down a career-high 21 kills, Hogan finished with 17 against four errors in 42 attempts. It was also her sixth double-double of the season. Senior Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) added 11 kills and freshman Courtney Cyr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) tallied eight kills. Senior Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) and freshman Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) each logged seven kills with the former totaling seven blocks.

Kuhn finished one kill shy of a triple-double with a season-high nine kills, 42 assists, and 15 digs. Junior libero Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) led the defensive effort from the back row with a career-high 33 digs.

Melissa Cole and KC Stingl paced Johns Hopkins with 14 kills, the former putting up 23 digs as well. Becky Paynter recorded 49 assists, four aces, and 13 digs and Alica Diehl put up 28 digs.

Gettysburg returns to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 12, for a non-conference meeting with Gallaudet University at 7 p.m.
