Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –
Sophomore forward Alex Zurn scored a game-high 15 points and tied a career-high with three blocked shots as the Gettysburg College men's basketball team broke open a close game midway through the second half in a 67-54 non-conference victory over York (Pa.) College Sunday afternoon in Bream Gymnasium.

Gettysburg (3-1), which led from start to finish, held the Spartans (3-2) to 32.8 percent shooting, marking the third time in four games this season that a Bullet opponent was limited to sub-33 percent shooting.

Zurn, who played just 21 minutes due to foul trouble before eventually fouling out, shot 5-for-7 from the floor, 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-3 at the foul line. He also threw down an emphatic alley-oop dunk on a perfect inbound pass from the sideline by junior guard Brendan Trelease late in the game to highlight a game-breaking Gettysburg run.

Freshman guard Stephen Poarch, who also played just 21 minutes due to fouls, contributed to a balanced scoring attack, scoring 11 points while grabbing five rebounds. Senior center Andrew Powers tossed in nine points to pull to within four points of the career 1,500-mark while dishing out seven assists and pulling in six rebounds.

Senior forward Kevin Kennedy also scored nine points for the Bullets and moved into a tie for 10th on the school's career 3-pointers made list with his 94th career trey. Sophomore forward Ben Constable hauled in a game-high eight rebounds.

Gettysburg shot 44.9 percent and 85.0 percent (17-for-20) at the foul line.

Senior guard Dylan Hoffman led the Spartans with 14 points.

The Bullets never trailed after Zurn hit three straight free throws after getting fouled on a 3-point attempt just over a minute into the contest, and a Kennedy trey with 14:06 on the clock capped a 13-0 Gettysburg run to open the game. Zurn and Poarch were forced to the bench early with foul trouble, however, and the two played just seven and six minutes, respectively, in the opening stanza.

York answered with eight straight points, and the Spartans drew to within three points (24-21) at the half when Hoffman converted a conventional three-point play with 30 seconds left.

Gettysburg held York to 26.7 percent shooting in the opening period but committed 11 of their 16 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

The Spartans crept to within one on three occasions in the second half, the last coming on a Matt Moley jumper with 11:12 left that made it 40-39. However, sophomore guard Derek Brooks canned a 3-pointer 24 seconds later to kick off the team's decisive 19-6 run. Five different Bullets scored during the surge, and Zurn's slam made it 59-45 with 2:34 remaining.

The Bullets iced the game at the foul line, going 6-for-6 at the charity stripe inside the final 1:40. Overall, Gettysburg made its final 10 free throws.

The Orange & Blue return to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday, when they host Johns Hopkins University at 7 p.m. in the team's final home game of the semester.
