SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore College defended its territory and sent Gettysburg College packing with a 3-0 loss for the second time this season in the first round of the Centennial Conference Volleyball Tournament Wednesday night.
Swarthmore (18-10), which came into 2010 having lost all 28 prior meetings with Gettysburg (16-14), proved its 3-0 win on Oct. 23 was no fluke by handing the visitors a 25-17, 25-15, 25-21 loss. The Bullets led by no more than two points in any of the three sets.
Seniors
Kate Yoder (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and
Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) put a stamp on outstanding careers at Gettysburg in the loss, posting eight and six kills, respectively. Yoder finished in the top 15 in school history in both kills (14th, 950) and blocks (8th, 287), while Burns notched the seventh-highest single-season block total at Gettysburg with 129 this fall.
Junior
Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) added six kills and 14 digs, while junior
Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) posted 14 assists and 11 digs.
Genny Pezzola paced the Garnet with a match-high 16 kills to go with 14 digs. Swarthmore advances to the Centennial Conference semifinals to face top seed and host Haverford College on Saturday, Nov. 6.
