GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore forward Alex Zurn recorded his first career double-double and Gettysburg shot 64.6 percent from the field in a 73-57 Centennial Conference victory over Johns Hopkins University Wednesday evening in Bream Gymnasium.

The Bullets (4-1, 2-0 CC), who won their third game in a row, led for most of the way and used a decisive 17-0 run spanning both halves to take control. Gettysburg nearly had all five starters score in double figures, with Zurn leading the way with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and a career-high 10 rebounds. Senior center Andrew Powers added 12 points and six assists and with his second bucket of the evening, scored his 1,500th career point, becoming just the sixth Bullet to reach the milestone.

Freshman guard Stephen Poarch added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting while grabbing five rebounds. Senior forward Kevin Kennedy netted 10 points while junior guard Brendan Trelease chipped in with nine.

Sophomore guard Derek Brooks dished out a career-high five assists for Gettysburg. Senior forward Mike Henrici and sophomore guard Adam Spengler scored 10 points apiece for Johns Hopkins (1-4, 0-2 CC).

The Bullets have now shot over 60 percent in each of their last three games against the Blue Jays. Last season, Gettysburg hit on 63.2 percent of its shots in their first meeting before setting a school record with a 69.4 percent shooting night in the second match-up, both Bullet victories.

For the second game in a row, Gettysburg got off to a strong start. After opening the game on a 13-0 run against York on Sunday, the Bullets outscored Hopkins 8-2 off the tip-off. Gettysburg led by as much as eight (14-6) before the Blue Jays reeled off a 10-0 run to assume its first lead (16-14) of the night following a Tim McCarty lay-up with 9:32 left in the opening half, prompting a Bullet 30-second timeout.

Gettysburg went back in front with back-to-back 3-pointers from Kennedy and Poarch, but Hopkins reclaimed the lead later in the half when Mike Rhoads broke a 24-24 tie with 3-pointer at the 4:05 mark. However, the Bullets closed the half on a 9-0 run, capped by a Kennedy trey just before the buzzer, to give the hosts a 35-28 halftime advantage.

The Bullets scored the first eight points of the second half as their lead ballooned to 43-28 with 17:52 on the clock following a 3 from Zurn. Johns Hopkins was unable to get the deficit into single digits the rest of the way, as a Daniel Corbett 3-pointer with 14:44 left and a Spengler jumper with 14:13 to go pulled the Jays to within 12 on both occasions. Gettysburg enjoyed its largest lead of the night when Trelease scored the last five points of an 8-0 Bullet run to make it 64-40 with 9:09 remaining.

Johns Hopkins shot 81.8 percent (9-for-11) at the foul line while Gettysburg went just 36.4 percent (4-for-11) at the charity stripe. The Bullets held a 29-23 rebounding advantage.

Gettysburg resumes its Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, when it visits Haverford College at 3 p.m.
