Baseball Drops a Pair at Bridgewater in Season Opener

Langhauser Hits 3-for-5 in Nightcap; Roy, Jackmuff Go Deep

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Gettysburg College baseball team opened its 2010 season with a pair of non-conference losses at Bridgewater (Va.) College on Sunday, as the Bullets lost 8-2 in the opener and 13-4 in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Eagles (3-4) took command with a four-run third against junior starter Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School) to go up 6-1. Karis yielded eight runs (five earned) in five innings before senior John Antrim-Cashin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Fordham Prep) came on to throw a scoreless sixth, striking out two.

Karis and sophomore Drew Roy (Needham, Mass./Needham) each banged a pair of hits, with Roy smacking a two-run homer, the first long ball of his collegiate career.

The Bullets struggled defensively in Game Two, committing five errors that led to six unearned runs. Senior Michael Sweeney (Bethesda, Md./St. Anselm's Abbey School) suffered the loss on the mound, throwing three innings and giving up nine runs, although only three were earned. The Eagles posted a pair of big innings in the nightcap, plating five runs in the second and six in the fourth to go up 11-0.

Senior Kevin Langhauser (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) had a big game for the Bullets at the plate, going 3-for-5. Junior Cam Riera (Medway, Mass./Medway) and senior Mike Backus (Immaculata, N.J./Piscataway) each ripped a pair of hits, with Backus legging out a triple, while junior Cory Jackmuff (Woodbury, N.J./West Deptford) slugged his first collegiate homer with a solo shot.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Catholic University at 3 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
