Box Score
BALTIMORE – Junior center
Andrew Powers (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) scored a game-high 26 points while freshman forward
Alex Zurn (Brookeville, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal) poured in 20 as Gettysburg shot a scalding 69.4 percent en route to a 72-65 victory over Johns Hopkins University at Goldfarb Arena Wednesday evening.
With the win, coupled with Washington's 78-75 loss to Haverford on Wednesday, the Bullets (10-9, 8-5 CC) took over sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings, as Gettysburg and Washington entered the night tied for fourth. The Bullets are now one game behind Ursinus for third place.
Sophomore guard
Brendan Trelease (Union, N.J./Roselle Catholic) added 12 points and shot 4-for-6 and 3-for-5 from 3-point territory for Gettysburg, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Senior guard
Brendan Hager (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) led all players with six assists as the Bullets also shot a season-best 89.5 percent (17-for-19) at the foul line and connected on 45.5 percent (5-for-11) of their 3-point attempts.
Powers shot 9-for-12 from the floor and was 7-of-8 at the foul line while Zurn, who also grabbed five rebounds, went 7-for-10 and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe.
Pat O'Connnell led Johns Hopkins (9-11, 5-8 CC) with 20 points while Andrew Farber-Miller had 15 points and five rebounds. The Blue Jays also enjoyed an outstanding shooting night, hitting on 50.0 percent of their field goals and going 14-for-15 at the foul line.
Powers and Trelease were hot right from the start, scoring 20 of the team's first 24 points as the Bullets raced out to a 24-10 lead over the game's opening 7:52. Trelease scored all of his points during the run, nailed a trio of 3-points before converting an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Gettysburg its early 14-point lead.
The Blue Jays got back into, however, outscoring the Bullets 20-6 over an 8:09 stretch to tie it at 30-all on a Farber-Miller dunk with 3:59 to go. Hopkins took its second and final lead (34-32) of the night on a Tim McCarty lay-up with 2:16 left before the Bullets ran off seven straight points. After a jumper from junior forward
Kevin Kennedy (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), Powers nailed a trey, which gave his team the lead for good, before hitting a jumper with 18 seconds left to make it 39-34. But Farber-Miller dropped in a lay-up just before the buzzer to make it a three-point game at the half.
Both teams were on fire in the opening period, with the Bullets burning the nets for 77.8 percent shooting and Hopkins converting 65.0 percent of its shots. Powers was perfect in the half, going 5-for-5 from the field, 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, and 4-for-4 at the foul line.
Neither team was able to pull away in the early part of the second half, and a Farber-Miller free throw with 10:28 left made it 53-48 in favor of the Bullets. But Zurn scored the next four points to push the Bullets advantage to nine, and Gettysburg enjoyed its first double-digit lead when a Powers lay-in put Gettysburg up 63-52 with 5:58 to go. A Zurn lay-up 23 seconds later completed a 12-4 Bullet run, and the Blue Jays were unable to get closer than nine until McCarty made a pair of free throws with six seconds left, setting the final score.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, hosting Ursinus in a Centennial Conference game starting at 2 p.m.
